Playable demo for X³ released

Post by CBJ »

For those of you who have been awaiting a playable demo before taking the plunge, or even just those who would like a slightly gentler introduction to the game, the wait is over. This playable demo walks you through key game concepts in a limited game universe. Don't imagine that it will all be plain sailing though. The deadly Kha'ak will be there too and you will have to contend with their presence while you learn about the other aspects of the game.

The playable demo can be downloaded from the Demo Download Page.

I'm slightly calmer, but thank you anyway.

On second thoughts: 905MB! I'll just stick with the game, thanks.

Just to be clear for the benefit of those who are thinking of downloading the playable demo to see what the latest changes are, the playable demo is not based on the very latest code. It was in fact built some time ago but could not be uploaded here until now because of an exclusivity agreement with certain magazines who wanted it for their cover disks. In other words if you are looking to see what will be in 1.4, don't bother downloading the demo. ;)

Would this be the one some of us "beta tested" and gave feedback how hard the fights were and how much money was made and how long you survived etc ?

If you look on the downloads page you will see that the copy protection is clearly stated.

Edit: Sorry, misread your question. The demo has to be copy protected to ensure that the game executable is encrypted in the same way as the full game. Unprotected demo executables are one method used by pirates to break the copy protection for full games.

I haven't got X3 yet (owing to a critical absense of financial liquidity) but I'll install this demo when I figure out a way to transfer a 900mb file from the University PCs to my PC using only one CD-RW. (A Philips CDRW, by the way...)

I hope that Winzip will compact it a bit...

Oh bum clouds. I'll content myself with the rolling demo, and hunt around for a DVD-RW equipped PAC.

You can use Winzip to create a zip file that's split into two, put it on two cd's and re-assemble it at home.

Is the demo responsible for the major lag on the egosoft website and forums ?

Probably. It'll settle soon enough, as soon as either a solution is found, or the number of people downloading tails off.
