What's the downside to unsigned scripts ?

Post by Deleted User »

1 Save games marked as 'cheated' ?
2 Incompatability with patch 1.3 ?
3 Excessive loss of race rep. (race-war scripts) ?

Upside:
might actually find SOME pirates (etc) in NPC sectors to fight
and increase race rep.

Is ANYONE ever going to get rep. high enough to buy M2(s) without
using scripts (other than scripting them straight in) ?

Where are all the pirates :?: :?: :?:
even with 50+ stations (many with transports) & 10 UTs I hardly ever see one now :(

Is the 1.3 'pirates now spawn from pirate stations' likely to change things
do you think ?

In general, the major risk of using unsigned scripts is having a good time, or missing up your game (which will only be a problem if you saved over your last save!) there is no way for X3 to screw up anything 'cept save games.

wtf :? Where did you get that from ? You can run BBS missions that are not signed without enabling the SE so how would they be marked as cheated or modified ?

Think you got your facts wrong there !

No downside, just means they have not been fully tested and approved by the dev team.
Some of the best scripts for x2 were never signed.

Agreed. You will probably never find any of my scripts signed because I don't want to go through the huge, painful process, but that doesn't mean my scripts aren't as good.

Milling_Hordesman made some of the best scripts for X2, including a gateless jumpdrive, carrier fleet commands that were much more advanced than the signed competitor's script, and more, and none of them were signed.

Unsigned community scripts are what MAKE this game, the fact that people can easily edit in new content is what made X2 such a hit too, in a years time you will have these scripts coming out of your ears and so much to do ingame you will board yourself into a room with your PC for the rest of your life! :p

Delayed reply....

thanks for putting my mind at rest about all that !

After seeing if 1.3 spices-up things (or not) in the X3 universe,
I definately want to try some of these great-sounding scripts.

But even with the 'index of scripts' sticky, its hard to see the wood
for the trees, how do players know what scripts are around ?

Do I need to browse around a lot, and gradually get the breadth of it?
or is there a better way.

Thanks for the replies :!:
(I wasn't sure if this would thread would get totally flamed  )

I suggest going through the list in the sticky. The scripts posted there have been tested for a while and should work. Kind of an 'unofficially signed'-list... :)

Without a proper rating sytem its hard to tell what's good an whats not, Most users are using polls for this which you will see if your browsing the links in the stickie

If you like the script concept skim through the link and you will find the issue's/bugs/fixes that have been implemented although some of the threads are huge and too much to read in one go.

It down to your personal opinion and as always the advice is to test the script in a separte save just incase you don't like it or it causes problems.

Most scripts are written by 1 person with no active beta testing until it's released (debugging your own code only goes so far, it needs a fresh pair of eyes to get a script into the bugfree/well balanced category) , the good thing about S+M is peeps accept this and instead of ranting feedback on the bugs and balance issue's :)
