[AP] [DiD] An Anonymous Argon

Post by Aenir »

Who am I? I don't know.
I grew up without 'ny family to speak of. My mother died giving birth to me, an' my father 'pparently ran off before even that happened. So I've gone through my life doing little more than existing, an' wandering from city to city. Never made friends, never made much o' myself.
So 'magine my surprise when I'm contacted by some feller in a suit saying my father up 'n died and left me some credits. How they tracked me down I'll never know, seein' as I was in the slums at the time. The money wasn't a whole lot, but considering 'til then I had jus' about nothin', it might as well o' been a treasure chest full o' gold. And this got me thinkin'.
You see, I had nothing here, an' I had no interest in this rock they called “Argon Prime”. So I left. Took the money and got a ticket off-planet, to the Federal Argon Shipyard hoverin' over us.
I had plans you see, as I'd decided on buying myself a small ship and seeing whether space was 'ny more interestin' than the crap-hole I grew up in. I took one of those cheap, tiny shuttles they somehow cramp people into. Smelled like something died in the back, and I knew what death smelled like.
'nyway, 'fter spending some long hours with that foul stench, we finally 'rrived at the shipyard. I found a guy who could sell me a ship, and asked him for the cheapest thing he had. 'fter he mentioned the price, my heart sank quite a bit. I knew I wouldn't have much credits 'fter buying a spaceship, but I 'xpected a bit more than a measly 2,500 credits leftover.
I bought it 'nyway though; the guy said the ship is a "Discoverer". An' I plan on doing just that. Discover the universe, an' maybe figure out who the hell I am along the way. 'Cause right now, I'm just 'nother 'nonymous Argon.

Chapter 1

So now tha' I'm finally in space, I need to figure out where the hell I'm goin'. Bringin' up the sector map, looks like there's 4 different gates I could go through. Not havin' much knowledge of the local sectors, I decide to head for Herron's Nebula, purely on the basis that my ship was pointin' at it when I undocked.

Right then. Now that I've picked, time to turn on this lil' ship's thrusters, an' not havin' much 'xperience piloting an interstellar spacecraft, I let the autopilot do its job.

. . .
This is takin' 'while longer than I thought it would, an' I ain't exactly got much to occupy myself with. Wish I could jus'...hang on, what's this thing? Singularity Engine Time Accelerator? Well I never 'as one for readin' manuals, so I hit the button and all a sudden everything's going a whole lot faster! Now that's more like it!

Enterin' Herron's Nebula, I see...a whole lotta asteroids, 'n not much else. 'pparently this ship's scanner 's not the best, and it can't pick out much aside from a couple ships that're right next to me. So I spend some time just flyin' 'round tryin' to find somethin' of interest.

So its after some minutes where I'm wonderin' if there's anything here besides ore mines and rimes facts that I spot a couple of similar-lookin' objects off in the distance. Havin' piqued my curiosity, I got closer until my scanner was able to identify what it was.

Well now ain't that somethin'! Seems some enterprisin' fellas have built a couple o' space fuel distilleries, and jus' so 'appens that the local Tradin' Station is acceptin' shipments of the stuff. Looks like I'm gonna be refuelin' my ship, if you catch my meanin'.

Havin' docked, I buy as much space fuel as I can: a grand total of four crates, seein' as my cargohold is 'bout at big as my last house. An' lemme tell ya, it was a might small box.

So wit' my cargo loaded its off to the Tradin' Station to see if they in need o' some local produce.

Turns out they REALLY want the stuff, as they're payin' through the roof for the stuff, and I jus' 'bout tripled what I paid for the stuff. I have a feelin' I know wha' I'll be doin' for the near future.

Seein' as I got some spare credits, I figure I might as well tune up this bucket they call a ship. 'pecifically, the cargobay. Should be able to hold a few more crates now, I think...

Well, I'll be darned! Those monkeys managed to squeeze in ten crates o' the stuff, 'though I think the last one may have been empty, not that I care, I doubt the guys at the Trading Station will notice.

Chapter 2

So I figure considerin' how thirsty the people on the Tradin' Station are and the fact tha' the distillery can't get rid of the stuff quick 'nough, I'll be doing runs for quite a bit. 'fter a couple more trips 'owever, I find that someone up an' bought all the stock at the distillery I'd been goin' to. An' I mean ALL of it. There weren't a drop left. So I decide to check out the other distillery that I'd seen, and while there's some, there ain't much.

Still, I was able to get this piece of junk they call a ship tuned up somewhat; increased the speed to a decent 306 m/s and maxed out the cargo hold...which was still only slightly larger than the biggest box I'd lived in. An' I still had far more credits left over than I started wit', at 13,344 credits. This lef' me in a bit o' a pickle though; now what was I s'pposed to do?

I head back to the Tradin' Station to see if I can find out anythin' of interest, seein' as this sector has a bit o' a reputation for gossip, seein' as all the space fuel loosens their tongues. I think that requires them bein' conscious 'owever, as mos' everyone's had a bit too much of the stuff I reckon. So its back to wandering.

'fter a bit more aimless meanderin', I come across a gate to a sector called The Hole. Not the mos' imaginative name for a sector I'd wager. Still, with naught else to do, I head on through to see what's on the other side. Enterin' through, I can see how it got its name...

[ external image ]

Though I think it could still be named a bit better. Perhaps The Crap Hole, because I could see bugger all in this crap. An' wit' the state of my sensors, I was not lookin' forward to getting lost in this goop. So I think I'll jus' turn right on back...

Rememberin' I'd glanced a gate near them space fuel distilleries, I make my way over and head on into... Power Circle. Ya know I think they could be jus' a lil' more creative with their sector names.

Now this sector's already lookin' better than Hole de Crap, as for starters I can see anythin' at all.

Much more pleasant.

Chapter 3

'though I can see, there ain't much to see besides more ore mines and some solar power plants. I can see a couple gates though, so making my way to the nearest one I find its to...Three Worlds? Seriously? Is the most noteworthy thing the fact that there are three worlds in the sector? You could have at least been less bland with the name. Here, I'll even help: how 'bout Triworlds? I expect to get full credit once you realize the the genius of this and officially rename your sector.

Headin' on into Triworlds then, first thing I notice is that the sector does in fact live up to its name as there are three planets that I can see.

Noticin' an Equipment Dock, I'm hopeful of somethin' to do, although I don' think my ship is quite up to the task someone offers me...

See, I've lived through many a box, so I know you can squeeze people into tight spaces. But I don't think you'd be able to fit twelve people in my ship's cargo an' have em survive the trip. So after turning down the offer, I decide to see if there's anythin' I can afford that can be of use.

So I'ma scannin' the things available and cringing at the prices when I notice somethin' called a Duplex Scanner. Computer says it'll be double my current scanner, an' at only 4212 credits they can't install it quick enough, they keep yellin' at me to calm down. Soon enough it's installed and its time to see if it was worth the expense.

Oh yeah, that's MUCH better. Perhaps I could go back to Crap de Hole and see if there's any hidden treasures...

For now though, I set off to the first gate I see. And the name of the sector happens to be...<drum roll>...Kingdom End. Now hold on a secon', that's almos' tolerable, could it be that the Argon Sector Naming Commission learned from their mistakes and were able to come up with less exactly-what-it-say names and showed some imagination? I'm doubtful, perhaps they got drunk and let their kids name it, but its worth a look regardless...
