it all only took around 5 minutes and when I return I find out that a fully-kitted cerberus with 10 nova vanguard onboard and homebased to it (I know nova's are not the best fighters but since the sector is really safe there was no need to have anything bigger I never see anything heavier than an M3 attacking my stations) was killed by an M3

so this raises a few questions:
1) AFAIK fighters that are homebased and docked at a ship will undock if it is attacked and defend it, is that the case? (I could have sworn it was I did after all own quite a few carriers in TC) I know that fighters did not undock because they are all dead and in message log it is not shown what killed them (it is just written your nova vanguard is destroyed)
2) if answer to question 1 is no than how did I make that (undocking and defending) happen? (I know I made it happen but apparently dont remember how)
3) since a lot of people have been saying that fleets are rubbish, I never bosered to use them in AP, so if I was using a fleet would it be any different?

P.S: anyway, guess I just need to put a boreas or tyr on top of each gate or drop a 100 or so LT's which I have over a 1000

EDIT:
since it happened just 5 minutes ago I decided to load and observe the combat, and guess what cerberus did destroy that blastclaw without any damage taken, but fighters still did not undock
and also the fact that it got killed when I was not looking but won when I was raises 1 extra question:
1) how is observed OOS combat different from not-observed OOS combat?
