X3 Multiplayer? Very much possible.

Post by VioletRapture »

In Morrowind and Oblivion, there is a mod that can simulate multiplayer to a degree. Basically, what it does is create an NPC of the player's character in each other's game worlds, and transfers data from the host's world to the client's, basically synchronizing their completely seperate clients. They are allowed to interact, trade items, and even fight, due to the player's input controlling their NPC in their partner's world, and visa versa.

With some ingenious modding, this may be possible in X3.

just because it can be done in another game, doesn't make it possible in X3.

the script editor is too limited to create a full multiplayer game. The best u can do is make al lthe player owned stations created in other players universe. But u definatly wouldn't be able to create player on player battles

I don't mean a script. The mod in Oblivion used an external program to create a link between two player clients.

It's not a full multiplayer game, it'd be much to laggy/incomplete. The best you can do is simulate it using NPC's that react to the other player's input.

The rhetoric behind your idea is somewhat sound, but you have to realize that building netcode from scratch for a game that has zero infrastructure for netcode is essentially impossible.

Like I said, they did it for Morrowind and Oblivion, so it might be almost impossible, but not entirely.

well what i was suggestion was to use an external program to do it, as scripts themselves cant send stuff over a network.

the problem is, the external program cant control the game engine directly, so it will need scripts that can control the game. But the scripts are too limited to be able to do anything decent.

like i said, u can get it to sync a universe with alot of work. But player on player combat would be imposbile, as the scripts cant control the ships so preceily.

the only other way would be to hack the games main files, which is much much more complicated, and really not worth the effort

plus you may have someone who uses startrek ships (like me) going up aginst someone who uses a ship (or ships) from say B5...the players would have to have exactly the same setup all times...plus some people use scripts that some find arnt needed (i use the benco sysoverride software script while someone like cy may use somthin similar but on a compleatly different level...

my point is that it wouldnt work because thier would be hundreds if not thousands of variables to deal with and no engin could handel it all with out tones of work...(also hacking the game files them selves but thats a different story in its self)...

You know what?

People who use ships from other games/movies in X3 are stupid in my eyes, anyway. It's like taking Goku and pairing him up with Ash Ketchum.

I would just like to thank you for insulting me and 1000's of other mod users who like to mess with their games after the stock game has gotten boring.

After you have played for 100 days plus (in game time) amassed a fortune of billions and have over 1000 stations in nearly 100 complexes, plus the fleet it takes to protect them, I think we are entitled to 'change it up' and add things that we like from wherever we want!

I will stop now before my rant becomes to much, but you get the point right? Think before you type or you'll make someone very mad like I am right now

I got absolutely no idea wtf's Goku nor Ash Ketchum, but all I can say - yes, merging those SW/B5/whatever ships is really stupid if you ask, but do not forget about many ships that were made from scratch for X3! But apparently the MP mod could have alike restrictions for owned ships/running scripts - but, no matter if you can accept that or not, there is no and is'n to gonna ever be an MP mod and I find that mod useless anyway so I don't care at all actually ;) As for Oblivion - there is an MP mod for Wing Commander: Prophecy - and what?

Ladies lets not hit each other with our handbags shall we

A little tip for you VioletRapture

If you are going to pour scorn on other users work and wishes then don't cite Pokemon + DragonballZ characters as a reference, your showing your age and your tastes ;)

anyway, even in case the MP mod would feature support for some fixed set of extra ships (like anybody's gonna play X3 with no XTM soon huh? ;) ):
1. Why d'ya need MP in X? X was always an SP game, one to be a great way to abandon the real life (tm) for a while - and now ya want to bring RL into X - isn't that lame?
2. SETA ;)
3. X is balanced for solo progress!
4. And DON'T EVEN THINK of MMO - that topic was beaten to death long ago, and I was among those who agree with the fact that we need no MMO out of X!
5. As for possibility - Hamster ;) Learn engine specs ffs!

again, when people think multiplayer they think mmo, sorry but i would like for someone i know to fly about with me so i have a usefull wingman and not a suicide headbutt merchant who is going to kill me by ramming me all the time .....

add to that, i am one person who will not be playing xtm, i played the previous version and thought it was just making the game into a fps, if i want that gameplay ill go on fear. Also add to this the attitude of half the people when you offer suggestions, or even mention any of the stuff from bali gi.
About the name - i was lost for a name on the forum and looking round, then a Bob Hope film came on, and i thought "that will do nicely"

i was born and raised argumentative i dont mean to offend ...... sorry

Ignoring the coding issue, there are a few in-game problems.

The most obvious is SETA.
Next most obvious (to me) is IS-vs-OS.

irregardless of whether this would work or not, about the only thing you could do is play turn-based and email save games to each other.

Is x3 even capable of running two sectors at once?
