What happened to the online complex calculators?

Post by strask412 »

Up until recently there were a couple of excellent complex construction calculators at altanetworks.com:

http://www.altanetworks.com/x3/x3tcocc.html
http://www.altanetworks.com/x3/x3apocc.html

but the domain seems to have expired and the tools are no longer accessible.

Does anyone have contact information for the author? Sadly I don't have the name or contact info cached anywhere so I can't get in touch.

I would like to see these tools made available again, and am willing to help with domain registration and/or hosting problems if I can be of any assistance. I just don't know who to make the offer to.

Failing this, what alternatives do people use for planning complex construction?

Yes, but the online ones let you show your complex to others easily.

I noticed this problem myself when browsing some complex ideas last week.

This one works for TC and should be largely ok for AP as well. I'd just use it for sharing though, as Xadrian is the superior option for planning your own complexes.

I noticed the online one sometimes gets the sun% wrong for some sectors, which almost messed me up before I caught it. Now I use Xadrian. You can post a xadrian save file online to share with others, its not that bad either. How often do you need to share complexes anyway :P

I always used Xadrian, and then punched it into the online one to share.

em3e3 created the complex calculator iirc. While he hasn't been seen for over two years in the forum, you can still try to send him a PM.

The site itself has been archived several times in the Internet archive wayback machine. So technically the code is still there. You probably won't be able to save and show any planned complexes to others though.

Alternatively, rohrbecka, the German user who translated and updated em3e3's complex calculator, hosted it here. Whereby there doesn't seem to be a link to the X3AP version.

Edit: typo.

Sadly not as much as we used to! This forum grew thick with new players looking to get a good start in X Economics 101. A couple of simple profitable complex ideas can get creative juices flowing, and replace frustration with enthusiasm.

Thanks for the reminder; I'd used Xadrian in the distant past but hadn't touched it recently. The user interface and such are certainly better than the online complex calculators I was asking about, so the only problem is convenient sharing as others have pointed out.

X2-Illuminatus: Thanks for the archive link, I should have thought of that before even posting. :)

I'll dig around in the javascript source and see if there's a suggestion of a license anywhere in there, and PM em3e3 potentially if I get ambitious and decide to re-host the tools.

Actually, a complex built in Xadrian can be shared easily enough with others that are using Xadrian.

Use the Export function to export the complex to text for a summary:
Game: X³: Albion Prelude
Sector: Profit Center Alpha
Suns: 150 %
Code: AwoFpwEBCAEFAgkBCgE9AToBAA==

Factories:
1x Drone Factory (Teladi)
1x Solar Power Plant M (Boron)
2x Crystal Fab M (Boron)
1x BoFu Chemical Lab L (Boron)
1x Bio Gas Factory L (Boron)
1x Massom Mill M (Split)
1x Scruffin Farm M (Split)

Total price: 18,495,980 Cr
Profit per Hour: 294,857 Cr
Or, you can export just the template code post it, and it can be imported into another copy of Xadrian:

I did not know Xadrian could do that. Very cool and simple; that's what I'll be doing from now on.

I am also completely lost without the Complex Calculator.

I've sent the author (em3e3) a PM. I'm not sure whether he checks the forum any more, though. He hasn't made a post in over 2 years. That isn't saying too much, I also mostly lurk. But he has a post count over 2,000+ and then - nothing.

I do have good news for you though: Only the domain has expired. The actual server is still there and you can still use the complex calculator!

http://66.39.35.164/x3/x3tcocc.html - X3:TC calculator
http://66.39.35.164/x3/x3apocc.html - X3:AP calculator

And if you add a line in your hosts file for this IP to altanetworks.com, everything will work as it always has. If you need help doing this, let me know whether you are Windows/Mac and I'll give you the instructions.
