My biggest problem is that I keep pissing off the wrong people, who are friends with the people I want to be friends with. Or somehow I piss the whole race off and get chased out of everyone's territory. I like playing totally free. I do some missions, but I also like to Pirate. Once I have a few ships, I set them to work as traders of fighter wings. I haven't gotten to the point where I'm building complexes, but I'll be there soon. So anything about setting up shop would be great. Thanks.

EDIT 07-01-10
Re-reading to see if i missed anything and...
Sorry if I seem to have ignore the previous comment. There is a list somewhere that shows who is friends with who,if you want to play tactically like that.
============================================
Norman Fudge has the first two main sections covered by Traders.
Once he has finished arming his four Novas he will clear Emperor's Wisdom of the Kha'ak clusters,so that the third main area is covered.
At the moment he is parked up in Akeela's Beacon admiring the spectacular views. He then will turn his attention south to see what the Boron clerk was hinting at.
Once he has established his presence in Paranidia,he will need to expand into direct trading from owned stations.
Sector support complexes seems to be the way forward here.It would be pointless to manufacture products that are not needed straight away,so each sector will be examined and the data fed into Xadrian's Complex Calculator. There are others,But this is my favorite. It comes in different versions ,depending on how developed your game map is.But you could just download the latest and ignore items from races / or sectors you don't cover yet.
Just put in all the data,
let it calculate what else you would need if you owned the stations.
Add that to the main list so that they appear in bold not "ghosted".
Remove your original data.
Voila...You are left with what you need to build, plus some extra factories which produce secondary resources.I tend to leave these in to give an extra trickle of credits.
Hope this helps for now.A more detailed tutorial will come from Norman when he is ready to expand in the direction.
===============================================
Well Oi be darned! If that ain't a booteefull nebula Oi don't know what is !
Akeela's Beacon. I could lose my self here just dreamin'.
But toim Oi be a movin again.Gotta go south.
Now maybe this is what he was alluding to.OTAS HQ and OTAS shipyard.Plus the Argon shipyard.
I've heard tell that OTAS have the most beneficial trading vessels around.
Large storage capacities and good speed in the smaller trade ship.
Oi'l be makin me acquaintance with the HQ staff oi think and then pop down to the ship yard for a little nosy around.Got to keep up appearances , even if oi not buyin' ow't yet.
Well there's a good start ! 6x 25 mj shields in stock.Just what I need for my Novas.
Jumpdrives,Triplex scanner and Docking Computers.Nearly all I need within a few sectors.
I don't know what those Borons consume for celebration but there's one Boron that will be rewarded later.I might even let him pilot a ship of mine.
With my four Novas (1 + 3 Raiders) fully shielded ,I just need a few more HEPTs and oim ready to take out some Kha'ak.Now to pop over to the shipyard.
I have about 8.000,000 cr so if I wanted , I could buy a few Mistrels. They be the better option as the Super Freighters are too slow for bargain hunting. But they do hold a vast amount of cargo, which will be useful later on..
... I can buy anything but the Boreas, credits permitting,The Boreas (M2) is one of the most sought after destroyers because of it's speed and fire-power.Although lacking a little in shielding.
But for me to get one of those, the Argon will have to update my passport to "Federation Overwatch"....Not much chance of that for a while. And it costs over 90M cr.
Back for more HEPTs then...
... got my little fleet kitted out and dropped into Emperor's Wisdom.
Do the Kha'ak have an intelligence/counter-intelligence service? They've scarpered
Oh well, time to adapt. Get my Adv sat production running independently of supply ships.

So this is where we deal with complex building.
As stated earlier I use Xadrian's Complex Calculator
http://www.ailis.de/~k/projects/xadrian/
But there are others.
I open up Xadrian, set the sector and select "Add a Factory".
Select Argon Adv. Sat Factory.
This gets listed in bold print.
Click on the wand icon at the top and it calculates what else you need.
It will offer you the cheapest and nearest ,in that order,so you may want only Argon SPPs if you don't want Boron. That is fine. just adjust accordingly
Click on the [+] sign on each line to bring the stations up in BOLD print.
Click on the [X] sign on the Advanced Sat Factory to remove that.
It does a quick recalculation of the figures and tells you it will cost nearly 16M cr. to complete this phase.
The chart below not only show the minerals needed but the whole running costs and potential profit per hour.(270,287 cr/hr profit).
Mines have to be added manually, but the chart below this sections tells you what minerals you need.
Norman Chose a safe place for his factory but not one with any silicon in-sector,so he will still need to supply that. Not to worry though, because there is silicon in Ore Belt.
The next chart shows storage. And at the bottom it tells you where the nearest shipyard is that sells what you need.
Ideally , I need my own TL for this, but with only 8M in the bank and 4M cr at the factory,I am going to have to hire one instead.

oi set off to Kindom End and the Boron Supply Orca is within com range.
the captain keeps saying he does not need communication but will charge me 1,400 credits for every gate he goes through.
=================================
Now I do not have the patience to sit down and work out if using Argon stuff would work out cheaper in the long run, although I suspect it might.
You can do the calcs yourself if you like.
==================================
Anyways he sets course to dock at the Shipyard in Kingdom End.
He does not comm you to say he's arrived,so I target his ship. and face my satelite. When he docks, I gets a message saying I am now targeting the sat.
I select three stations and send the TL to CBSE.It will take some time to get there so i can build up more credits one the way.
... eventually I arrive in CBSE and see the captain is waiting for me.
I target his ship and comm the captain.
===========================================
The idea of targeting the TL is so that when he has delivered the first station you only have to press [C] to com the captain again.Just make sure you are within comm range.
Comm the Captain.
Ask him to "Drop freight here".
Select the station you wish to set up.
You will now be presented with Sector Map.
If you have put at least one Advanced Satelite in the sector you can now activate the camera.
press [k]
If no ADV SAT then you miss out on some features.
Such as this....you now see a 3D live footage of the area you are in on the map.
You now have a flashing icon representing the station you chose.
Press [5] on the number keypad.
Press the[right arrow] key once.
This places the icon over an existing station.
Now press the [HOME] key a few times to zoom in to the station.
you can now move your icon by using the numpad keys 8,6,2 and 4.
pressingthe [Insert] key changes the plane so you can place the station up or down from the original level.
Move the icon to were you want it.Not too close to or too far from your existing station.
If you are happy with it's placement , press [Enter].
If you have actuated the video cam,you can zoom in closer and use the 7,9,3 and 1 keys to orient the station.

The Orca captain bids farewell when he has emptied his cargo of your shipment.
Time to get some more stations added.
=======================================
So Oi went back up to KE and the Queen allowed me some more stations.I sent them to CBSE and to kill time,I decided to go to Paranid Prime and get the station for my Majaglit supply.
Oh goody goody!
looking down I can see they will let me have my own 25 mj shield production. How nice.Must add that to my station complex list.
I'm now told I would have been better off with a crystal fab L.Oh well. That's what happens when you don't plan well enough ahead.
If oi'd ha gon te the Paranid first,Oi moight ha saved some money.
Who said hind sight is something we should be born wid?

The PHQ ( Personal Head Quarters) only needs supplies if it is being used like a trading station or manufacturing ships from blueprints.
It will tell you what resoures it needs, how much of each resource and it will take as long to build as it does to reverse engineer ships.
Not all ships can be reverse engineered, but you can buy blueprints of many ships.
EDIT
The X3TC Stats Compendium V2.5.1 (or later,if revised?) gives details of resources needed for ship production , including quantities per hour.
http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=227483
end EDIT
Otherwise it is a place to dock any type of ship and or do a colour job on your ships.(Although you can't change the colour of Boron ships afaik).
Egosoft shop has X3 gold for sale which has both X3 Reunion and TC.
This is a current thread about profitable complexes...

Not much to report just now.
Waiting for my traders to earn me enough cash to buy a second SPP - M,a Soyery and all the CCKs Oi need to be a joinin' 'tall together loik.
Then OI'll explain ow Oi vit 'em.

This is the area of my complex that I came unstuck on. I will still have to supply silicon,or get the npc traders to supply it.
I will need some ore for the shields, too , so from Xadrian I can see that a 13yield asteroid with an Ore Mine L,(Boron), is adequate, giving a slight surplus without any extra stations needed.
=============================================
Well! 'ere Oi go a gen.Askin' 'round Oi find the nearest place Oi kin git a L production Ore mine is in a place called Depths of Silence.Oi'd 'afta go through Teladi space to get there at the moment.Oi got no maps in me computer of that sector yet.
So Oi'l zettle for M production. Barely gives what oi need on 13 yield 'roid if oi kin foind it.
'Cordin' to moi chart ther be three 'roids 'ere abouts, so I got the mineral scanner and all Oi have to do is ght within ten km of the roid.select the target menu and scan....
There we be...One at 40...one at 25...and why is it that the one you look for is always the one you scan last?...one at 13.
Oi must wait for my SPP delivery and send the captain back for a mine.
Earlier on Oi got me self a second hand M6. Now if Oi kit it out with a tractor beam,Oi kin tow the mine to where moi complex will be.I think the Paranid kin 'elp me ther.

So its time to join the good fight now. I am playing the Teladi Trafficker, I have close to 3 mil now, and I have some 6 traders and 7 fighters, all of which I have salvaged. I have a mod that allows npc to cause other npcs to bailout. When I set them up to do sector trading, I can't tell them to trade in 2 jump radius until they are a certain level. Do you use something to allow them to do so from the get go, or are you skipping that for the sake of the story?

In the story you will note that I start them training in Ore Belt.
There are other places that are good for this process.Just find a sector with ecell production and a number of factories requiring ecells.
Or at least a sector with good In-Sector trading potential.
Yes,without scripts in this game,so you have to wait for the captains to level up.You can see what level they are at by the number in their name, when you call up the info screen.
They increase radius coverage as this number increases.
If you read the notes on this process (sorry not got the link at the moment),you will learn that the best LT (Local Trader) coverage is gained by setting them to 2 (three sector coverage ~ the home sector + 2 outside). And having them overlap by one sector.
This is said to be more efficient than UTs(Universal Traders)
=============================
Been Editing this.Someone said they read the first five pages and stopped.
Yes, Most of the basics are covered now but there are some interesting times ahead.
Norman learns how to build more factories in less physical space.(No mods or scripts involved).
So take a break and join Norman again on the next page.

Oi waz a t'inkin'. Now it would be nice if Oi could 'ave me Ore mine mixed in wid me complex when Oi build it..But that wold mean me 'avin' a means to put it there.
Oi asked a few guys at the bar and they zed loik ah culd be a wantin' a tractor beam.
" But where wuld Oi be a findin' one o them gidgits ?" Oi asked.
Then someone said there be factories bein sold in Third Redemption,a Paranid Super Shipyard has em.
So OI upped vrom me seat and went a huntin'. Somewhere south of Rolk's Legacy. In me Hydra now.Oi'm told that's the best ship Oi got for the job at the moment.
...OH £$%^&^%$ .Bleedin' Pirate sector in the ways. Oi need that equipment if moi complex is gonna work out. Play cautious loik..."just passin' through guv...".......Where's That South Gate?....ships coming up from SSW.Readjust course to SSW. Ah thar she be.Small and blue.Oh well time to make coffee before oi get there.
Through the gate and there's the shipyard, but what's this Oi see ?There's a Tractor Beam Factory ,up 'n' runnin' with 8 in stock.Cheaper for me to get one for now.
I get back to CBSE and look at what stations I have built.
Right I just need that 25MJ shield production and the Ore mine...that's about 4.5 Million credits and Oi have about 1 M .
Best let my traders do some more work....
...Meanwhile Oi'm off to get my new 2nd Hand Dolphin ready....

This would be West-country Village ( a mixture of Dorset,Somerset and Wiltshire, and a little of the refined Hampshire) accent Plus slight Irish phrases thrown in.
For example a person speaking with a broad Wiltshire accent may ask how you are ..."Ow be ist'?" which dates back to olde english "How be is thee?"
But I try not to be quite as broad as that.
This gives him the advantage of only being seen as a harmless trader while secretly plotting his revenge. If he pretends to be " a little short in the head",he can learn more than people want him to know about.
If anyone does not understand some of the things said by Norman Fudge, feel free to ask.
The old "what ho " and "Jolly dee old Chap" belongs more to the English country gentleman ,retired airman type of person

There is only one ship in this game I have not bought. That is the original Mercury from the start of the game.ALL the rest are 2nd hand.
Note that this is TC we are playing here.
Whenever you enter a sector, press [.] to bring up the sector map.
Switch menu from "All" to "Ships".
If the list runs off the bottom, scan down the whole list.
The ships with the credits icon attached will probably offer the said ship to you...for a price. So Com the captain and follow the dialogue as normal
You will get a message detailing the condition of the ship and how much it will cost you.
Anything with 70% shields or less is usually fare game.
Accept.
The ship's control is now transferred to you.
The safest thing to do at this point is tell it to dock at a station of your choice.,and dock there also.
Transfer to the newly acquired craft, undock and move to somewhere safe where you can manually repair it.
Redock ,change back to your ship,if you wish and either send the new ship to a shipyard and sell for profit,or upgrade and use with the rest of your fleet.
NOTES
I usually send it first to a trading station for upgrades before I repair it,if I intend to keep it.
Ships with over 70% hull integrity tend to be more expensive and less profitable. In some cases you can buy a new ship with upgrades for the price of the ship on offer.
However you can sometimes get bonuses like equipment or marines etc still onboard, but I think this is purely random,so don't bet on it.
At shipyards you may be able to com a pilot who has a ship for sale.It may even be an M6
Some other stations have also offered me M3 etc.
Depending on your style of play,if you have life-support fitted on your ship
you can collect the pilot when he leaves the ship he's sold to you and either take him to his destination or sell him as a slave.Either way you may get paid.
If you are extremely lucky, you may find a captain that wants to buy a ship for well over the list price.Great if you have just repaired said ship for a quarter of the asking price

Well Oi went back to the Dolphin. It's a Super Freighter. That's two Oi 'ave now.Got it with a new pilot learnin' 'is trade in Ore Belt.
Now Oi 'ave the 4.5 M credits but 'ave me a Vulture Tanker ,a waitin' for upgrade so Oi'l just do that now an' see about my complex buildin' after.
So Oi'm heading off to Kingdom End for the Ore Mine M and then down to Paranid Prime for the Shield production.
The Boron Supply Orca is on 'is way to CBSE and Oi'm a goin' to Paranid prime now.
That's sorted.Back to Ore Belt.Send the Vulture Tanker tradin'.
Junp into a Demeter Minor that a retiring Argon had no more need for.
55% hull ? No problem.Transfer some shields overstocked on the vulture Tanker and I'm off agin, killing time 'til those supply ships arrive.
I have about 3 M cr and need only 63,750 for all the Complex Construction Kits from the shipyard at CBSE.

This is the bit some of you have been waiting for.
Towing the mine to my Complex area and linking it all together.
I think if I am to give full justice to this stage,I should provide you all with some pics and details.
Briefly then...
I will be towing the mine to an area I have marked out for it and hopefully positioning neatly.
Then I will connect two of my stations that are furthest from the final position of my docking hub.
Gradually I will connect each station to the hub and join two stations to form the final hub position.
Then join the two hubs together ,linking the whole complex together with the hub where I want it.
The next stage will be setting it running and assigning a ship or more to collect silicon, although if I set the price right ,npc traders will do the work for me.
After that I need to have some silicon mine of my own.
So until then ...(tomorrow).
Note that this is TC we are playing here.
