I game on a decent laptop these days, so the mouse-follow control option is just what I need but I can't seem to get the combat aiming control right. I've read a thread about autoaim not working with mouse-follow and to switch the right-mouse to bore aim but it still doesn't seem right.
With the auto-aim switched on, neither setting seems to hit accurately. With bore aim, I can hit if I lead the cursor, but that kind of negates the point of the autoaim.
For those of you using mouse-follow, what's the best setup? Are you aiming with the mouse cursor or the target reticle?

I am pretty sure that is exactly what you are supposed to doDhruin wrote:

It does not do the whole job for you, it is just an assist

Not sure this is what he meant. I am getting a similar problem that when I am fighting M4's, or more often M5's, I have to lead the targetting cursor both on bore and cursor mode. ie I hit more when the targetting cursor is not flashing ('cos I'm leading it by up to half a screen) than when it is; though this is generally on a tight high speed flyby.
Generally means that I hit about as much on M5s with semi (where all I get is the targetting cursor as a hint) as I do with full auto. Though when taking on bigger ships the auto aim makes for a huge improvement.
Anyway; it's more fun on semi... well; so long as you aren't playing bankrupt assassin

When on mouse follow mode, the little circle (direction circle if I may) in the centre of your HUD is controlled by your mouse and it determines direction and speed of a given turn. Which roughly means that, the further the circle is from the centre, the tighter/faster will be the turn towards the direction it's deviating.
About weapons usage under mouse follow mode:
On mouse firing mode, you just have to place the direction circle upon the target's lead indicator and fire.
Now, where does autoaim come in? Not on mouse firing, but on BORESIGHT, which is controled by the [CTRL] key (not right mouse button -that's for mouse firing). There's another symbol on your hud, something like a short horizontal line. It always moves behind the direction circle. That's what you have to place on your target's lead indicator, in order for autoaim to kick in. That's when boresight firing is accurate and successful.

To get old classic settings back or close to it, change.
Cursor fire with mouse to [none], boersite fire to [right mouse button]
cursor mode from [space] to [shift + n], then change classic mode to [space] from [shift + n] (Easy to hit space than shift + n)
When doing dogfights press [space] and you have your fee mouse movement control.
Fire with right button.
Left button dose nothing untill you exit classic mode which you just hit [space] again to use cursor pointer.
I do hope they have an option in next patch to reverse mouse buttons. Being disabled "only 2 fingers + thumb" i find it difficult to wrap my hands round mouse for contant right button pressing.

In my game, I bind Boresight to LMB, and Cursor aim to the Mouse Wheel. That way, I can use both from the mouse, without having to use the left hand on the CTRL key.
Boresight aim does require some getting used to, because the horizontal reticule is hard to see sometimes. (Here hoping that Egosoft gives the user the option of changing the boresight reticule into a cross-hair instead of 2 wiggling horizontal lines).
I used to use Classic mode when I started the game, but now I almost entirely use the new Freelancer mode.
