DevNet leak: XT-0180:CPU turned into cucumber

Post by SymTec ltd. »

X3TC 2.0 RC3 (2GB exe)

I was testing the >2GB exe for TC. After a few hours of running the game, I had a freeze of several seconds. After that I had massive performance slowdown and gfx artifacting all over the screen - then, the screen turned black and my PC went off. I couldn't turn it on again, so I'm now on my laptop.

The PC also smelled a bit burnt. When I opened it, there was a cucumber where my CPU should have been. I once read a warning about this - can this possibly be caused by a >2GB exe running on a 32bit-system?

Also see attached photos.

Please, can you help me? Will Egosoft pay for the loss of my CPU? It was a 3GHz Dualcore, so it will be hard to replace. Also, I had all my data and personal files on that computer, so I can't do any testing or anything right now. I hope my harddrive still works. Will Egosoft pay for all that?

thx,
SymTec :|

Can you reproduce with the latest version. Unless you can, I'll have to reject this ;-)

Sorry, I don't know if this is still possible... apparently somebody ate the cucumber.

But I'll try to reproduce as soon as I get a new CPU (Cucumber Processing Unit).

I've taken a unilateral decision to lift the NDA on this bug report.

From the pictures provided it would appear that your cucumber is misaligned. I would suggest reapplication of a thin layer of thermal conductive mayo and reseating the entire CPU assembly.

You said you'd lost some performance, how long does it take to run SuperPie to one million digits now?

p.s. It's amazing how you can play X3TC on a TNT2 64MB, that's some excellent optimisation by somebody at egosoft.

That's not a very useful cooling solution you have fitted. Try replacing the fan with something beefier - at present "cool as a cucumber" is not an appropriate phrase.

Sadly enough, the first thing I noticed was the PC-133 sticker on the RAM, and thinking how the hell is he running TC with THAT?!

Obviously, you haven't disabled 'ffdshow'. The "ffd" stands for "Fresh Food Diet", as is mentioned in the stickies.

Also, please post a dxdiag output.

And finally - I have to ask - is it overcooked? (boom, boom)

Looks undercooked to me, and therein lies the problem it couldn't take the CPU load....
