Is there something wrong with my game?

Post by Winter Dragon »

Why can't I make a decent profit when trading?

First to quell some assumptions:

i) I bought X-T (I ordered it from the online store) so my copy is a legit copy
ii) I have not modded my game in any way when trying to play a proper game.
iii) I want help with trading empires, not alternatives like capturing etc. :)

I do what most people recommend at the start, and I sell my buster for an Argon Lifter. Now what do I do with it? My tactic has always been to pick up goods for a cheap price and sell them to a factory which requires them for a higher price.

Ie. Pick up energy cells @ 6cr. and sell them @ 17-18cr.

That makes me about 5000-6000cr. Darned if I am going to do that 100 times in a row to earn enough for my first factory.

I try taking passengers to their destinations, but six-twelve hours later (after flying in the wrong direction) I end up getting 1/2 the reward than the one offered... and even the full reward is a pittance. 12,000cr. ??

I cheated once because I got so sick of making <50,000cr profits within the first ten hours of playing, so I gave myself 15 million cr.

With this I bought:

6 SPPs
4 Cahoona Bakerys
4 Cattle Ranches
2 Crystal Fabs

In one hour I made <20,000cr profit from my surplus of crystals, because they take 8 minutes to produce 6 crystals (or is it 6 minutes for 8?) Anyway it's a flaming long time for me, to wait for such a small amount of resources, I figured it wasn't worth having factorys.

If you have a strategy that could inspire me to get playing again could you please share it? I'm so sick of making dozens of trips just to get a tiny sum of money each time. X-BTF had a much better economy model. Crystal Fabs could hold up to 16,000-25,000 crystals in stock, and make more than 200,000cr. profit per hour. What happened to those good old days?

Hi Dip,

Have you fully maxed the ship in terms of cargo bay, speed and rudder?

That's a starting point.

When I sold the Buster for the Lifter I maxxed out the cargobay to 1500 units and got 10 engine upgrades with 8 rudder tunings.. and SETA of course. (Never buy a ship without it!)

After my first hour of play (trading non-stop) I'd made enough money to get 5 more engine upgrades and 5 more rudder tunings, plus extras like a trading system extension etc. nothing fancy.

Right ok. Trade in EC's, Ore, Sillicon, Argnu Beef, Weapons, small grade weapons and make sure the factory is up to copasity.

That doc I sent you will go through a theoretical route with you and it might point you in a few directions.

Initially making cash is slow, but when you have fully worked out what needds X and where you need to go to aquire X, then you will be fine.

crunn wrote:Also, you could do what I did at the start :-

1) trade buster for lifter.
2) max out lifter asap.
3) save up money to buy a second lifter (not a factory).

The second lifter doubles your income obviously.
I think I had ten maxed out lifters on the go (and two elites flying guard) before I bought my first factory.
Hi. Yes you can do that, but for remote traders, Dolphins in my opinion are very good. 1 Dolphin fully maxed makes 2 Lifters in terms of cargo. Lifters I will have as my current ship, and definitely for factories. But for remote traders, Dolphins all the way. After all, work this out.

1500 EC's bought at 6 CR and sold for 26 CR or, 3000 EC's bought for 6 CR and sold for 26 CR. Same appplies with Ore. The long term profits you will make will be enormous because you are buying in cheep bulk and selling at maximum possible price a finominal amount and an excelent profit to go with it.

Agreed, Dolphins are far better for remote trading. However they are FAR more expensive and VERY slow (easy pickings for pirates). This is why I chose the fast cheep Lifters at the beginning of the game when funds were tight.
Though now I have plenty money and factories and escort fighters I do use Dolphins for remote trading and I'm not too concerned if I loose the occasional one.

I like to make friends with the paranoids (not a spelling mistake!) then I can trade in Maglit (a spelling mistake?) which buys very cheap and sell high better than EC's

Not trying to insult you Diplo, but what did you expect?

They made earning a profit a little more difficult in XT. In my opinion it is still far too easy though. And that is before you start selling your captured orinocos at 500,000 each.

I didn't bother selling my ship, and started trading with the original ship. Went straight to Seizwell and started dealing Teladianium and ECs. Then some silicon etc. Maybe a few weapons when the price is right.

Yes it is a slow process initially, but that is life. Giving yourself 15 million and buying half a dozen factories is going to seriously reduce your enjoyment of the game and I recomend starting again.

SPPs don't make much money, and I only use them to stock my own factories.

Yeah na you're right, cheating can take the fun out, but I only did that once and it was actually a long time ago (more than 4 months ago)

I haven't cheated since then, as I only wanted to test what the factorys would be like when I eventually got to buying them with my hard earned cash.

Also no offense taken ;)

Please give pardon if I was hasty in comment. I've been playing too much Red Alert 2 - where you get money in an instant ;)

I just find it hard getting back into slow paced games. I'll try everyone's suggestions, thanks

Just remember Dip, that there are always gaps for you to fill when it comes to the X-econamy. Those gaps when found are very very easy to fill.

I think the trick to trading is to have a fleet of ships to trade with by remote.
The last 2 times I played I didn't use the SETA once in the first day game time because I had so many ships to give orders to. And by the end of the 3rd day I had an Orca

Personaly I prefer the early days of the game when you start building your empire from scratch. After you own a dozen factories and umpteen ships, the game just becomes a resource management game, and you take on the role of a caretaker.

Its like the Sim City games: Great fun building the city, no fun running it afterward.

At least we don't have to hire handymen to clean up inside the factories, or repair ment to ensure your ships are running smoothly.

Should add, once you've got your lifter maxxed out with engine mods & cargo. Keep your eyes peeled for those guys that contact you as "the only real trader" Once your cargo bay is a half decent size they can offer 100,000+ cr missions.

Will serious help boost those credits :)

2 days ago i put a sun oil refinery in dukes domain, and a flower farm in priest rings, and the nostrop seels once it gets to @ 400 in stock at max price all day!!! Im now trying rastar in empires edge. I got my sun refcinery from seizewell, and told the albatross to dock at paranid prime when i was done. I did the same with an orca for the flower farm. It was Great trench, but faster than the albatross in Ianamus Zura. they are both docked in paranid prime. Ready for me to make my Paranid outpost to the east whenever im ready!!
