So, who's this Grimm guy anyway?

Post by Grimm »

Seems there has been an awful lot of talk lately about people being afraid to show themselves and so on, so I figures I'd break the mold a bit and bare it all (Not that way EM - sorry :P)

Who am I? Well, have a look:

28 years old, I live in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada - the cannabis capitol of the world, and I run Cartel Incorporated, a Pirate guild/fansite based on the X-Universe. I am also an internet DJ with two shows that run every Friday and Tuesday at 9:00 PM GMT, a 3D modeller of some small talent, and I am the webmaster for Error691.com - a website with many hidden sides.

How about you? Feeling brave? :D

Just turned 23, Grand Admiral Apothos captains the Imperial Star Destroyer Relentless, enjoys chess, music, fine art and fine wine.
In his spare time, he likes to bomb planets and watch his Noghri bodyguard, Nuhk, torture people.

He is seeking a tall female, with GSOH, NS, thick wallet and warm blood.

Argon only please. No religious nuts.

Well, if I had a camera, I'd burn your retinas with my image. But i don't so I can't! hahaha

But I can say that My real name is Ben Rypstra and I live in Sydney Australia, the poof capital of Oz (no really, it is! :o ) I have a crappy website on error691.com which I haven't touched for about six months and it isn't even finished! I think I should delete it to save Grimmus some hard drive space.

I'm the C.E.O of a transport and production company under the name of Thalass T'Kynn (suprise!) which isn't really doing anything at the moment, but if anyone needs energy cells or for a transporter or two, call me! (lol)

The Dutch spelling of my name (Rijpstra - my opa changed it when he moved here in the 70's) means "The man from the land outside the dike" which I found out the other day. (haha it's funny, I reckon)

I work for Red Rat Airlines at sydney airport as an apprentice avionics technician. and I'm currently addicted to Blind Guardian for some reason.

Um, I don't think you want to go into any more depth now. It gets all squidgy after this

Anyone else?

(BTW, I thought Amsterdam was the pot capital of the world?)

My real name is Paul Manning, I'm 32. I live in the centre of Manchester, the nothing capital of nowhere.

I work for ........ Engineering, programming Computer controlled machines, making bit's of planes.

What else....erm. I like my music LOUD, ie set to 11, and my cars fast.

Read a lot (SF and Fantasy) as well as factual.

Have hair down to my arse, 19 various body piercing's, and much tattooing.

Oh yeah and I like X too.

What do you mean, clones, when you can have the original? :-)

The above picture was taken in June 2001.

Born on Valentine's Day 1967, I'm living in western Germany, city of Duesseldorf. I'm the Webmaster of game publisher THQ, for their sites in DE/UK/FR/AU.

In my spare time, there are several things competing for my attention: Firstly, I am playing the keys in a Metal band called Dragonfyre (sorry, no HP yet).

Secondly, and more importantly, I am into Science Fiction (and I don't mean Sci-Fi!) for over 25 years now. I am writing SF for a long time already, and right now, I'm struggling to become a pro writer, which is pretty difficult these days, especially in SF. My second book will be published coming march, the third is in the making.

Lastly, I am very interested in the coming and creation of a technological singularity, since I believe humanity will benefit greatly from it. I am also donating 100 EUR/month to the case. Guess, that makes me a futurist, right? :-)

Helge,
regarding your comment on it being hard to publish SF these days, is that because you feel there is so much utter crap being published? (Which I do)

Or that you think there is a lack of publishers for SF?

Just curious as I have spent the last 2 years writing the first 9.5 chapters of my book. Would also love to do it full time (Think I'll get the first one published first though.) Even if I never send it to an editor or publisher I will be happy when it is finished.

cool! Sign me up for some nanopooter implants, and maybe an artificial limb or three (I want a tail! haha) and at least one eye! hahaha

I wonder if I can afford to help out?

hmm, 100 Euros = 200 ozzie dollars? I don't think I can quite afford 50 bucks a week! lol

But I don't belive that true AI will come about from programming. Well, AI maybe. But ALife is a different story. heh

If you're writing in english, you'll have less of a problem to find a publisher; the US/UK market is comparatively huge. In germany, though, SF literature currently is in it's greatest crisis since it's inception. If you don't make it bestseller, twice or more, you can't live off it. And currently, there are only 2, or 5 at the most, german SF authors who can pull this stunt.

That's the spirit - that's why we started writing in the first place, isn't it? To tell a tale, and have it carry ourselves away. Upon becoming a pro, things start to look differently, tho, and one will find out that writing is not only the fun it used to be. It's work, hard work, and it can and _will_ drive one through ups and downs like on a roller coaster. And It's hard work, very hard, dedicated work.

The real fun begins at the point where the AI will do it's own research on self-improvement...

there have been some proposed theories that it just might be impossible for a machine to realise itself, that is recurse to a level of creating a concept of "mind". i believe i had found one on the comp.ai.genetic newsgroup once.

Well, what's that conciousness thing anyway, and why would a true AGI need it? :-)

At least we know now where all the hair is going. It's a well known fact that there is only a finite amount of hair in the universe, so the longer Helge, Grimm et al grow theirs, the shorter and shorter (and nonexistant) mine gets. I sure some of your know how it is.

Yep know the problem, used to have long hair now restrict myself to a grade 3... I reconcile myself that it was all due to wearing a crash helmet and therefore for a good cause :D

Nooo, that is how Skynet managed to wipe out the humans. Didn't you ever see Terminator 2?
