Planet of mine...

Post by Galaxy613 »

I don't know if this is the right place for this, but I thought I'll show all ya'all one of my better works I have done.

I don't have a name for it, nor any type of story for it. So everyone is welcome if they feel like it to make a story about this planet! :) If I can find some other good shots of my work I'll put them up in this thread too...

I like it, and I too wonder what program you used.

A little constructive critisism if you don't mind, though:

Try reducing the contrast setting on the light shining on the planet. A negative value works well (depending on your software) and produces a nice, realistic effect when it shines onto a sphere.

Increase the polycount of the planet - you want that curve to be as smooth as possible, but at the moment I can see the corners of the polygons when I look at the edge of the sphere. If you've got it set to a 36-segment sphere, try upping it to somewhere nearer 100. It'll take more memory and render time, but the result is worth it. You only need to fret about polycounts when you're animating (render times) or when you're making something to be used in a game. You can also then use displacement effects on the surface to carve out craters and add massive mountains.

Refraction: try using a mask/filter for the planet's light refraction. Sneaky use of textures can make it so the ice reflects the sunlight more strongly than the rock.

:)

I'll see about doing that, I'll post another pic when I think it's good anough again...

I edited the textures and did some stuff, I also added a moon to the planet.

Much better with the specularity and the smoothness of the sphere, although what happened to the red planet's atmosphere?

Just created a starship(*), and did some abnormal stuff to the textures of the space ship and it turned out pretty darn good. So I put it into the same solar system of the planet & the moon and I got these shots...

(*) Whats a difference between a spaceship and a starship? For most people it doesn't matter and the two words are interchangable, but to me a spaceship is a interplanetary ship and a starship is a interstellar ship. It is just how my brain works.

I don't think I can get it like I did in the first pic again, well I COULD but the way I did it, if I zoomed in or out just one click of the mouse wheel it'll look all wrong. :-/ This is the best I can do right now:

Not THAT busy. ^^; The textures of the ship were already mada before and it onbly took me around 30-60 minutes to make the ship and like 30 or so minutes to UVMap it and add textures. I wonder if I could get this into X2...
Barron wrote:That's a  from me! Is there a lot of iron oc planet's surface - rusty?
Could be, because I haven't made a story about it yet it can be anything you want it to be! Maybe...
Made up story on the spot wrote:After succesfully completing the first few test jump, Starship Alpha was ready to jump to Deneb. One of the farthest stars you can see from Sol. But during the jump something went wrong, when they came out of the jump they were not around Deneb but some other, alien, star.

From the inital scans there was only one major planet. It was made mainly from iron and rock mixture with highly poisonious water covering 35% of the surface. It had a lonely moon orbiting it pretty close. The moon was smaller then Terra's moon.
Have fun with what you think it is! :D
