How about an extension of the common escort missions in XT? You could put yourself up for hire to the other independent traders in X2 as for example a convoy escort. Something like 1000 credits per 5 minutes etc, and you could hire them to do this for you too.
This might help people who prefer the warfare method get started a little quicker, or help struggling factory owners stay safe early on when they can't afford their own escort ships.
