Anyone up for a competition?

Post by SteveMill »

I've been playing X2 a lot recently and have realised that I'm so busy arranging factories, patrols etc (my hands are like claws at the moment due to the heavy keyboard use) I don't remember to look up and smell the roses.

Every now and then I look out the cockpit and see something stunning. Whatever my gripes about the interface there is no doubt that the graphics are top notch.

So - the competition.

Imagine you are a photographer sent out to document some of these amazing sites for X-Universe Geographic, post your best five snaps, with location and title (no retouching) and we can vote - either as a poll here or by email.

Prizes you say? All I can offer as a first prize is a brand new copy of X-Universe Volume 1, featuring Steel's excellent Dominion story and the first part of the Rogue Trilogy which I'll post anywhere in the world.

Second prize - 2 copies.

Anyone interested in the idea as a competitor or plain spectator? If it's naff and stupid say so and I will (somewhat uncharacteristically  ) STFU.

Sounds like a good idea, if people will take part.

I'll need to wait until my graphics card gets replaced (hopefully) as playing X2 at the moment wont do it justice. Also I've got to admit that I spend very little time actually looking around when playing so most of the stunning backdrops are entirely wasted on me.

Ah - good point. Resolution is an issue. I should have thought of that. How about two prizes - one for low res, one for hi res?

Or you could always line up you shot and switch the graphics options up just for that shot?

AI - your point about not seeing the sights is precisely the reason I'm proposing the competition. Gives us something to actually do in the game itself if we tire of fighting and managing and gets us to appreciate the great work Ego did on the visuals. It's a shame that all I see of them usually is jumpgates, stations looming at speed on SETA and most of all - the hanger interior through semi-transparent menues.

I'm sorry I can't offer any better X-related prizes, maybe Ego would like to throw something into the pot?

Sounds like fun, I usually only take the shots that I think are pretty

Maybe have a theme to it?

I want to see pictures of a factory empire that has been arranged to spell out words. e.g. "Kill the Split!!!!" spelled out in factories or ships right accross Split-space.

No -one seemed that interested, or not enough for it to be worthwhile. I'd want at least 20 or so entrants.

I'll take some when the exams are over. It's even a strain on chap 10. More delays, sorry Steve.

I haven't even got the game installed. I've only every played it for about 1 hour max (seriously). Had joystick trouble that I never fixed.

Sounds cool, but where do we show the snaps we have made, and can they be of anything in X2. Coz I got some great ship angles.

If people are up for a competition then I guess we need to see them. Is anyone able to host them on a site if entrants don't have the web facility themselves?

I'm looking for spectacular 'natural' shots although ships could be part of the content. The intention is to highlight the sights there are to see, things like sunrises over a planet etc etc - basically like a natural world photography competition.

On the resolution issue - in as high a res as possible (can't remeber, can res be changed from within game just to take a spectacular shot? But as important will be the 'eye' of the photographer - the composition etc.

And give the shot an evocative name.

I can host them, for as long as no image is larger than 300kb

Cool, thanks K.

So - all shots to be under 300kb and emailed to K for display. Zipped?
