Un-signed scripts what are the dangers?

Post by Socio »

I noticed that quite a few people only use or only want signed scripts and was just curious as to why? Does a signed script or mod just verify it will work in the game or do these scripts and mods have the ability to do more heinous things like corrupt your game or perhaps other things outside the game like key loggers, plant trojans etc…?

I just want to know the dangers before using un-signed scripts.

Thanks

oh no nothing outside the game.

All signed scripts are tested to work with eachother.

Unsigned scripts will require you to enable the script editor which puts a modified watermark in the top left of the screen.
They can also conflict sometimes, if you bodge the install of them then they can spout readtext everywhere or they crash the game rarely.

Its can happen only if it is very raw version of script, not tested by players yet, or if you install it uncorrectly.

if`ll you download and correctly install a correctly version of unsgned sript - it will work properly.

and not all scripts needs activation of script-editor. but watermark "modified" will apperar as well :)...

If you dont scared of this watermark and want some cool unsigned scripts - dowload and use it, but at first - read topics about this scripts - there you can find replyes from poeples that already use this scripts.

Like I say, it is only rarely.

Also there is a script to remove the modified watermark.

So basically, read through the forum here, find a script you like the sound of and if it is unsigned just read the user comments. If its all good then go for it!

Just remember that signed scripts are at the end of the day unsigned scripts which have been tested by mods and had documentation added and a bit of code tidying. There are alot of scripts unsigned that have been submitted to be signed and are of a high enough quality to probably eventually be signed (at least not until after the return)

The script editor has the power to create or destroy anything in the universe, money, ships, stations, eve stars and planets. It is very easy for a script to change the universe. Badly written scripts can also crash the game, slow down the game or freeze it completely and unless the script is running on one of your ships or something you can destroy it's often impossible to remove it from your saved game.

signed scripts have been checked that they don't cause any problems like that, they're also checked that they are balanced and in tune with the original game (supposedly), cannot be exploited, accounts for every possibility, works with other signed content, and are basically idiot proof.

It almost no effort to create what ever you desire in the universe, it takes ten times the effort to write a simple usefull command that won't foul up your game if some thing unexpected happens. It takes ten time that effort to get that command near signing standards.

My initial impression of the script editor was that it was a over engineered piece of shite and in the last year of using it my impression hasn't really changed. Be very carefull when using it.
