X2 Music video, some oppinions and ideas wanted

Post by Avis »

MODs I'm not sure if this is a Creative Tumbleweed forum post or not (as it doesnt contain any creativity ;-) ) and is only discussing the subject,, so I'm playing safe and posting 'ere :-)

Ok, for those who are familiar with my previous X-music videos, or indeed those who havn't.
I'm currently working on my latest greatest video the usual 4 ish minutes of X2 space battling action etc, likely to be to the tune of Rammstein again,, well very likely seing as Ive already started choreographing to a specific song ;-)

again all rendered in 3Dstudio max.

anyway a couple of things

1) distribution of the video,, how and what ?
for various reasons including not leaste the sheer volume of bandwidth my vids have eaten up in the past I can't use any free providers really as they tend to lock down not long after posting.
Also the fact I am actually 'borrowing' another artists song makes using my ISP webspace (or anyone elses) a uncomfortable thing.

So I've been debating using a file sharing system of some kind, I'm not up to speed on what options are about so any educating anyone can do would be greatly appreciated.

2) what sort of filesize should I aim for (within reason) ie is their any point in doing a low res highly compressed version (10-ish meg but looks cack), I am confident that I can compress to very good quality full res etc to around 30 meg,, or should I just say screw it everyone has BB now anyway so maintain as good a quality as possible and file will probably be around 70 meg ?
doing all isnt really an option because compression is time consuming and as boring as watching paint dry,,, not leaste then distributing.

3) maybe not this video, but I have also had visions of a more acted video clip series,, nothing major just the odd few lines here and their, problem is I aint an inpersonator so ain't great with making up characters voices, would people be willing to record themselves acting out a couple of lines to MP3 to be used in the video ?

thats all I can think of right now, I'm hoping to put my previous attempts to shame with this latest one, and more so the one I'm already planning to follow it ;-)
be even better if I could get some people on board to assist with various things (ie 3D modelers, voice acting, etc) but more of that as I start work on it.

If this is anything like your previous videos, it definitely belongs in the Creative forum. I'm happy to move this in there if you want, just let me know.

I don't have bb. Not available in my area yet. January. If I'm even in range of the exchange.

I'm quite happy to do some voice acting if you want, mate. :D

As for the file size... well even with my crappy DSL I wouldn't mind the 70meg'er. That's what flashget is for. :P

I would at least recommend shooting for under 15 megs. I have experience in making videos for communities and bandwith is an issue.

Answer to 1: I haven't had any problems with copywrited songs but I always put the song name and title in the credits. I don't know much about the copywrite laws but I think as I understand as long as I don't SELL the video with the copywrited song.

You can always try lycos free website. 50 megs free but with all those cruddy banners. You can also just directly link the webfile to a forum and you can download it. I've never really tested out the max bandwidth so I have no more ideas in this area.

Answer to 2: Try 15 megs and 30ish khz sound-That "MIGHT" balanace things out between quality and sound for the low quality.

I've been able to squeeze 2 minutes into 9 megs with decent quality and sound. Windows movie maker 2 has the option to where you set how much space you want to movie to take up and it automatically does the rest.

30 megs is great to shoot for anything more and it might just be crazy. but having a super quality and spreading it over file sharing like bittorrent would be a very good way of distributing.

Answer to 3: Most likely yes. I would do it and I am planning for a series with voice acting eventually for an MMO that I play.

excelent, thanks skullhead.

I will be aiming to make as good a quality evenif it means several passes to encode to make a modem friendly version, I wont be using Windows Movie maker it just doesnt maintain nearly as much quality as I expect ;-)
besides I have paid £13 (about $20 US I seem to recall) for DivX pro I'm gona use it :D

Bit torrent is coming up again and again (been discussing this problem of distribution with folks on ICQ and MSN), I think it may hold the answer :-)

again thanks

Was just about to suggest BitTorrent. That way, you can host the file on your ISP webspace, it's legal AND fast. Well, once some people get started leeching that is.
