Competition - Write a Novel in a month

Post by SteveMill »

Here's a fun looking thing.

http://www.nanowrimo.org/
National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over talent and craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.

As you spend November writing, you can draw comfort from the fact that, all around the world, other National Novel Writing Month participants are going through the same joys and sorrows of producing the Great Frantic Novel. Wrimos meet throughout the month to offer encouragement, commiseration, and -- when the thing is done -- the kind of raucous celebrations that tend to frighten animals and small children.

In 2003, we had about 25,000 participants. Over 3500 of them crossed the 50k finish line by the midnight deadline, entering into the annals of NaNoWriMo superstardom forever. They started the month as auto mechanics, out-of-work actors, and middle school English teachers. They walked away novelists.

It does sound fun indeed. I guess an hour every day will be just about enough to meet the requirements. As I understand this is really only something that one does for oneself. So you basically practice your creativity and to let it flow without concentrating on precision too much. Pretty good idea!

Sounds good, I might give it a go as I've had an idea for a story in my head for a while but not had much insentive to do it. (plus I've been busy with coursework and The Deep Void)
This could be a chance to use it without having to think to much.
Where do we send entries in to?

Can't, sorry. I'm in col and have 2 novels already on the go. Don't want to spoil any of them, or my creativity, just because of a competition to create a novel in one month. Not enough time!!!

Check out the website - it's a full fledged writers community. A couple of novels have been published but basically it's a fun/motivation thing. It's like rushing out a first draft you then go back and polish. If I wasn't busy on my own novel I'd enter but as I've already started it, it's ineligible.

If I could come up with a good new idea I might give it a go.

Writing 2 novels at once. I'm going to check the definition of 'spreading yourself too thin'.

What are they about?

I was trying to write The Deep Void something else and do coursework at one point but in the end it was to stressful and time consuming.
Now I can do more writing as coursework's over...for the moment.

Can't tell you, sorry, would take too long. It took me about 20 minutes to explain one to a friend, and the other one needs MUCH fine tuning and revamping. Could send each chapter of the one I'm quite proud of so far to this site, though. Expect chapters 1, 2 and 3 here within a few days. As for 4, 5, 6 and 7, I'll send them when 8, 9, 10 and 11 are complete. I want to stay 4 chapters in front of everyone. Anyway, you guys could provide me with some really constructive criticism, or you COULD, hope not, shaft it down the drain-pipe and tell me I'm not cut out for writing novels. Pessimism is the root of all...

Began yesterday, good luck to all taking part. Now back to writing.
Looks like the next part of the deep void will be early december then!

Trying to write 2 at once is, from my current point of view, 1 too many.

And that's sort of where I'm at currently.

So nice idea, and would give it a shot but I'd have to stop writing the others.

This would be very interesting, but alas I can't. (besides my complete lack of writing skills) I'll be entertaining my fiancee, mum and half-brother for most of november. I don't think they'd appreciate me spending hours at a time clickity-clacking away at the key... board.... wait. I do that already. *facepalms*
