Windows XP--Communication Vid Missing

Post by -Skylark- »

Hello everyone. This is a problem I've talked about having in another thread.

I'm running X-BTF/XT in WinXP Home with a MSI GeForce4 Ti4400, using a complete set of NVidia's own 40.72 WHQL certified drivers. This problem occurs whether or not I run these games in Win95 compatability mode.

This is the first time I've ever played these games, so I want to enjoy them to their fullest (any Privateer fans?!). I know this was talked about a long time ago, but I would appreciate any reiteration of what helped in the past, or anything that might hint at a solution.

I use RivaTuner to tweak the drivers only when I need to, and have been spending way too much time troubleshooting with it but to no avail. I'm not afraid to try something rather complicated, since I am pretty familiar with all the little settings and registry values.

Thanks for all your help so far, and any help you will provide. You have a great taste in games!

Check out the recent threads. Someone else had same problem.

They sorted it out by using a different set of drivers. Nvidias I think.

try this

Try setting the game up to play in native XP mode... use the -lowpri switch in the shortcut instead of win95 mode.

You dont actually need it in that mode to play the game and it may interface into the medial player better, which is whats needed for the vid to show up on the screen in the game.

Good Luck

Hi -Silencer... :)

This could be similar to a problem I used to get when I had the GEF2 with XP.. and I still sometimes get it with th Ti4600...

When the comms start, if you get a white speckled rectangle instead a picture of the communicator... I found that by pressing F8 and going into your card setup, and reset your display first to 16bit, then back to 32bit, it solved the problem for me :D

Try it and see if it helps...

Cheers..

Interesting...

Thanks guys for the suggestions.

Firebird, I'm going to ask you another question over at the X-Universe forum about how you got things working, so keep an eye out for it. I have tried running it in native XP.

Sir Alen, your suggestion is intriguing. You see, I don't get ANY indication at all of a comm vid; since I never played these games before I didn't even know I was supposed to until Firebird mentioned them in his last thread.

Anyways, I wonder if this problem occurs on other OS's, namely Win98. Because if it doesn't, then worst-comes-to-worse, I'll just partition my drive and slap Win98 in there. I've had a dual boot setup before.

Simply untick Automatic Quality in F8

Had this problem in WinME and XP Pro., both times solved by simply unticking Auto Quality in Video options.

Well m8, I don't recall having this problem before I went over to XP... and my other PC is under W98 and now has the GEF2.. and I haven't yet seen the prob on there.. :)

The graphics *glitch* only happens occasionally under XP for me, and its not such a big thing really, perhaps your problem is due to something completely different :?:

I'm such a perfectionist!

Well, all, thanks for offering the numerous suggestions (especially you, Firebird). I've tried them, and haven't found any workable solutions. Should I just give up and keep playing? That would be the common sense approach, so anyone who knows me will tell you I won't do that. There are some (more drastic) things I will try. I'm never content unless I'm fiddling with my computer, anyway.

I was talking to a friend about the difference between people who only play on consoles (X-box, etc.) and those who play on computers (and consoles, too, no doubt). It seems to me that computer gamers are much more thoughtful, patient, and tenacious than those who play only on consoles. Console gamers know that every time they play a new game, it's gonna run at it's best. We computer gamers know that there is often no guarantee of that on our machines. So we rise to the challenge and get troubleshooting. Your help with me in this has proven that you at least understand that.

Thanks again guys. I'll be peeking in often, and posting myself occasionally. X2, here I come!
