Impossible to start a new game if game files are modified?

Post by Damar Stiehl »

This is a bit strange, and disturbing.

I tried to start a new game using my modified TShips, Tbullets, Trockets and TLasers files and all I got was lime-green screen with gravidar and the word "disconnected" on it.

I then removed the modified TXT files and extracted default PCK files from the DAT file. Everything worked just fine.

I used OlisJ's X2Modder and unpacked the PCK into TXT format. Everything still works.

I then went into TBullets.txt and doubled the bullet speed of Beta HEPT. On the attempt to start a new game or to play a simulator mission I got a lime-green screen.

I then went BACK to TBullets.txt and restored the bullet speed of Beta HEPT to its original value. Everything worked.

Thinking that it was the HEPT bullet speed that was causing the crash, I went into TShips.txt and changed the hull strength of the Osprey to 46000 (vs. original 45000). Again, on start new game or simulator I got a lime-green screen. When I changed the value back to 45000, everything worked.

Now mind you, I can still load my old save games and play them just fine with the modified TXT files. Changes that I make reflect correctly on the game. It's just starting a new game that is a problem, no matter what I modify.

Is this a known issue?

I've never had a problem starting new modified games. Is it just your edits? Try starting a new game using someone else's mod.

When you edit the txt files what are you using?

If it's notepad make sure the word wrapping is turned off.

I use TextPad. IMO the best text editor out there and never gave me any problems... but I'm beginning to suspect it...

Try it in notepad with word wrapping off and see if that helps.

I just tried starting a game using Shadowtech's Supercarrier mod and it gave me a lime-green crash. I didn't edit Shadowtech's files at all...

Re-install your game and see what happens. Never heard of this before. Maybe try relocating your PCK files(leave the txt files and only move corresponding pck files) and then start a new game, though I doubt the latter suggestion will have any effect at all.

Well let us know if moving the *.pck files worked.

If you have some init scripts in the scripts directory when you try to start a new game it will screw it up unless they have a delay in adding wares. Try removing them and starting a new game.
