Hard Disk install help!!
I bought a new HD as my slave one has been informed by the PC that failure was going to happen!
So I swapped the old one for the new one in the PC. On boot up, I could see this new HD being detected. But when I click in 'My Computer', its not listed with the Primary HD?! So I checked in Device Manager in Control Panel, its listed there with the Primary HD?
I have set the jumper correct and can't think why I can't use it.
Anyone have ideas?
Thanks

You have 2 options for format --->
1. Formating tru the windows ,but you say ther is not in the My Comp, and if there is and you can ad whit ad/rem hardware in Control Panel and when is just on the list you have to point and guyd to the preferance of the hard disk or whit right mouse btn in the menu you have format .This is in all windows same ,but 95 .
2.Disconet your primary HDD and just format the sec HDD but use as stand alone disc jumper and whit flopy . ------> make shor you have flopy ready befor or you can download from windows download page on MSN .
Make shor what format you want and system FAT32 or other .
I have befor smal mistake in Formating and my HDD didn't want to show on the Explorer Browser at all ,in about 2 days time just after i give up on this HDD becouse was conected and all was fine i found disc ,stay next to me and was upside down and so ther is small cabel under the disc and have to be conected to the some think ther ,but was just a little disconected .I conect and after try again and all was fine .Or if you steel have problem check your conecting cabel of HDD-s maybe some times even jumpers can be cabel selected .

Don't do it the hard way... (Morfius' way)
Do you have windows XP? If so it's easy.
start > settings > Control panel > administrative tools > computer management > click Disk Management under "storage" heading > select disk, right-click, click format.
That should get you set up. If you have windows XP make sure you format it with NTFS. it will ask you when you click format.
If using windows 98...
start > run > type "fdisk" in the box, click run. follow onscreen instructions.
Maybe someone could give better instructions on the win98 method... it's been so long since I've done it from within 98...

Won't that method only work if you allready have a partition on there? And if it is over 120GB he should be using the software that came on the hard drive (or download the seperate tool) to use the full capacity. unless he is using a decent IDE card of course, or if it is SATA. This list could go on for a while couldn't it?Battle Pope wrote:Don't do it the hard way... (Morfius' way)![]()

Thats pretty much it... Battle Pope nailed it right on the head.
The only problem had was that the drive WAS disconnected from the system for some reason when I did it...but somehow..it managed to sort itself out.
Truth is...I can't remember what I did...but it worked.
My advise would be to use the software that comes with the HD as they have directions for formatting and setting up the HD through windows.
ust make sure that you use the FAT32 settings...they can really mess up your day if you don't.
Cheers

Ok guys... here is the answer for 9 out of 10 problems you have on your computer.... REINSTALL WINDOWS... yeah you heard me.. windows has a half life.. actually its more like a 1/4th life... its kinda funny though your problem .. it should be a quick install.. try this..... un hook one of your cd drives... if you have two. and hook up the HD as a master and see if it works and if it reconizes the full drive... that way you can eliminate a faulty drive... dont think ive ever messed with a slave HD before be it that i have a 160 gig HD ... i really dont think ill ever use that much space... maybe i should consider renting some of it out.
