There is a big lack of other ships to DL... Thats why I looked up some free ship models for the modders to play with.

Yeah, well this is a very small modding comunity, sad really theres alot of potential, its quite an easy game to mod. But addng ships is, from what Ive seen, very difficult.

Not to mention they are foricing you to have a 3000 dollar modelling package in order to do it, more robust support woulda been nice but near to impossible as far as i see.

Nobody is forcing anyone to have 3DStudio Max. This just happens to be the 3D program EGOSOFT is using for X2 - The Threat and the format the game engine uses too. You still can design a 3D model in most of the other 3D programs like Milkshake, Rhino etc. Just export your 3D model as a .prj or 3ds or whatever 3DStudio Max lets you import and anyone having 3DSMax will convert it for you. Like I have done for a couple of people.

Cheers

The trouble is that no one seems to know anyone who has (or will admit to having!) a copy of 3dsmax.

There aren't exactly alot of people offering to convert moddles for people.

The documentation on adding new moddles is rather lacking to, so unless your an experienced 3d moddler (and lets be honest, not many of us are) you don't stand any chance what so ever of figuring out how to do it.

We need a step by step walk through (click here, type this, click here) for normal people like me to follow.

An official explenation of Tships, Trockets, Tfactories etc. etc. would be very helpfull too........ ( although Stormfronts mod kit http://www3.telus.net/public/starnet/ot ... .v.4.0.zip) is very good.)

It is however a shame that he and others had to spend days trying to figure this info out.

X2 was sold on the basis of it being extremely easy to modify, which I'm sure it will be, when we finally figure out how to do it all.

it was? I bought it on the strengths of it a ) being an X game, and b ) being set in a larger universe with more controlable ships - I didn't even know about the script editor, I didn't know or expect it to be modifiable... and despite my fairly active participation in the scripting forums, I don't tend to use anything much outside the original scripts save for a couple of tweakers I threw together myself

I would never buy a game just on how modifiable it is - it can be nice to change stuff later of course, but if you're buying a game based purely on how much you can change it, then maybe you should just look for a game that's more the way you want it to be?

I think you misunderstood... ( or more likely I didn't explain myself properly  )

One of the main things x2 was sold on was the ability to write your own scripts etc and the ease of which it would be possible to modify the game.

I remember reading an interview about a year ago with one of the Egosoft 'developer' chaps and in it they made a BIG point about X2's modability.

This wasn't however the only reason I bought it, I was alSo looking for something that would let me relive the whole 'Elite experience', which btw I think x2 does VERY well.

fair enough :)

I do seem to remember there being talk of building your own ships from pre-designed "blocks", back a year or so ago... shame that didn't happen

Im working on a ship that will probably fall into a super M0 classification, may actaully end up too big for the gate system. BUT if all goes well fighters will launch in squadrons of 4-8 at a time. That would really kickass wheny ou get jumped buya few khaak clusters. As soon as its far enugh along ill render a few pics out.

I have been looking at doing new ships but the problem I have found is that there are no reference materials for doing it.

If you knew what numbers matched what bodies and parts you could actually create new ships using the pieces already in X2 (imagine changing the bayamon to have a split scorpion head unit instead of that ugly skull)

I've been trying to figure out all the numbers so that I can create an editor to mix and match parts. But I haven't been having much luck. Hopefully having sent the NDA to Egosoft will allow me better access to resources for such things.

Edit: someday I will learn how to type what I am thinking.
