Coming back to X4, now with new controller toys

Post by wathman00 »

I decided to come back to X4 since there are new DLCs I have yet to touch and some time to play this summer. My old, basic Logitech joystick is pretty much trash now, so got a Thrustmaster T1600 as I did not want to pay too much, and it was on sale. Well, it turns out that I got the FCS flight pack with throttle and rudder pedals for the sale price of just the stick so I made out like a bandit. I'm a lefty, so I may not even be using the throttle if there's no way to flip it to right-hand. For the rudders though, how do people generally use them in X4, or should I just leave them aside?

When I played in the past, I just stuck to basic flight functions on the cheap joystick, and supplemented that with keyboard for strafing and rolls. Empire management was all KBM.

I have T-16000m with twcs throttle. I also use mouse and keyboard for map stuff. No foot pedals, not sure what I would use it for. I really like having the throttle, I have a ton of essential functions mapped to it.

The throttle is pretty neat, just wish it could be used in the right hand easily. As for pedals, I can map the roll to the pedal slides, but I already use the twist Z on the joystick for that. I'm going to try out target/next target on the pedal press since I seem to use that a lot when dogfighting.

Things I use on the throttle are boost and reverse toggle, engine stop, travel drive/scan mode/seta selection, target selection modes, strafe (using index finger joystick), zoom in and out (using right/left paddles), flight assist on/off. For joystick, I use top hat for camera or head movement, and the buttons on the side for various map and mission functions, toggle turret status, request docking, etc.

I used to have Saitek X52 for more than a decade. Its Z-axis (the twist) died years ago, so I had only pitch and yaw in use.

Then I got a new stick. It had twist too, but now in rabbit hole of bit more expensive controllers, I later added pedals and disabled the twist.

In X4 I have Adaptive Steering on. Stick X-axis is the "primary" and the pedals are the "secondary" (while Y-axis remains the pitch).
That means that pedals are now (in the new flight model) yaw on most ships and X-axis is roll. XL ships and the suit have roll on pedals ...
What can I say? Twisted preferences?
