The young man in the control room, now fully dressed in the space suit, realized that there was no way out of the control room. He looked around again in desperation and noticed that his father, with his wild shooting, had destroyed everything in the room except the ships communications system.
He ran over to it and pushed one of the buttons next to it labelled ‘escape pod launch station’.
“Jim are you there? This is private Steven Heller speaking.” The young man, who was Steven Heller, spoke clearly into the microphone.
A voice replied, “This is technician Jim Stvenson, how can I help?”
“Listen, my father, commander Richard Heller, could be heading your way soon, stop him don’t let him leave, he’s turned against the empire.”
“Oh,” Jim sounded rather shocked, “well I’m afraid he’s already gone, he said he was headed for Necreminia.”
“HE’S LYING!!!” Jim yelled through the microphone. “Look there are around 50 destroyers waiting to destroy us just around two miles away. Alert the fighters immediately. Oh and for gods sake send somebody to unlock the control room doors.” Steven spoke very urgently.
The line at the other went blank, Jim was obviously already on it. Steven looked at his watch.
‘Bugger’ He thought to himself ‘Just two minutes to go.’
Steven began to pace the room, every now and then he looked at the screen.
Eventually he shouted out “WHERE THE F*** ARE THOSE FIGHTERS!!!”
Then the control room doors slid open.
Steven ran over to the man and hugged him.
“Thank you!” squealed Steven in an almost tearful voice.
The man stared at Steven who was nowing running into another room.
“Hey,” said one of the men in the room Steven had just run into, “you can’t come in here!”
“Shut it,” said Steven, holding up a hand to the mans face, “and get to an escape pod, NOW!”
Steven jogged over to another microphone which happened to be a PA system.
“Attention,” he spoke clearly into the microphone, “this station is under attack, please proceed to the nearest escape pod.”
The other man looked at Steven for a moment then ran out into the corridor. Steven followed he ran down a different passage to the other man and ended up in the bay where the fighters were held. He jumped into the nearest one and started it up.
He then muttered “It’s payback time.” And with that his fighter took off and flew out of the bay doors.
Steven looked around in amazement, around 200 escape pods were zooming away from the enemy destroyers whilst around 150 fighters were heading towards them.
Just as Steven had exited the Remera each of the destroyers fired to shots and the entire station exploded.
Steven was sickened to see the limp corpses and pieces of flesh from men, women and children floating aimlessly around him.
This had seemed to spur on every one of the fighter pilots as they all sped up, almost simultaneously, had opened fire on the destroyers.
“Ha ha” laughed a voice through the intercom, “that must of done something to ‘em.”
Steven couldn’t help smiling a little whoever had spoken had to be right, there was no way that couldn’t have annihilated at least one of the destroyers.
The large cloud of smoke was now wafting away starting to reveal the destroyers.
“No…” gasped Steven with a look of disbelief on his face. “It’s as if we didn’t even fire at them.”
An angered voice came over the intercom “That’s it head for them full speed look for a weakness on the surface.”
With this all of the fighters sped forwards heading for the various destroyers.
Steven came within about 500 metres of one of them and then suddenly it opened fire. Around ten large pulse cannons had come out of nowhere and now about four of them were concentrating all their fire on him.
Steven weaved in and out of large red beams one passed about three inches in front of his window.
Steven then saw a weak spot at the back although there was still one pulse cannon to protect it.
Meanwhile the treacherous commander Richard Heller was no board one of the destroyers looking out at the action with a slightly worried look on his face. Then a deep voice with no emotion in it came from behind him.
“Do not be concerned they cannot defeat us.”
“I wasn’t worried!” said Richard Heller slightly faster than he had wanted and with that he turned around to see a hooded figure around seven feet tall.
“You are Richard Heller!?!” It was more of a statement than an answer but Richard thought he should answer just the same.
“Yes!” he replied shortly and firmly as if trying to hide a fear of this man standing in front of him.
“Good,” said the voice still completely empty of all emotion, “then to business.”
The hooded figure sat in a large brown leather chair behind a class desk. It oozes with style and gave the impression that it belonged to somebody very important.
Richard sat down on the other side of the desk in rather less desirable steel chair.
“And I suppose you are Mr Gransan.” Said Richard curtly.
He held out his hand to the hooded man who did not take it and after a few seconds Richard withdrew it.
“Firstly,” said Mr Gransan sharply, “let me make sure that you completely understand that we are not friends merely business partners. Do you get that?”
“Ye…yes,” stammered Richard now unable to hide his fear.
“Secondly I do not trust and therefore you will ask no questions.” Mr Gransan said this in almost a shout.
Richard starred at the man in front of him as if he had just been slapped but after a few seconds answered shortly.
“Right!” In a slightly sour voice.
“Very well,” Mr Gransan, now speaking in a very calm voice as he leant back in his chair, “well do you have it?”
“Hmm…” Richard had been drifting away slightly but soon came back down to earth, “oh, yes…of course.”
He hesitated for a moment and then pulled the two test tubes out of his pocket and laid them on the table.
“I see…” said Mr Gransan now with curiosity in his voice as he picked up each of the test tubes in turn and examined them closely.
“Now…” said Richard sharply, “my 30 million.” Staring at Mr Gransan impatiently. “And then I’ll be off.”
“Oh I’m afraid I can’t allow that.” Said Mr Gransan in an evil whisper.
“What…” said Richard with panic on his face and in his voice, “what do you mean? Why not?”
“Well,” continued Mr Gransan in that same evil whisper, “like I said I don’t trust you.”
Richard saw Mr Gransan’s hand make a sharp movement under the table and that was the last thing he ever saw.
Mr Gransan stood up holding a blaster in his hand, he then walked coolly out of the room with the two test tubes in the other hand.
At the door he looked back, he smirked under his black hood and murmured to himself,
“Well he was a traitor…nobody will miss him.”
Back outside Steven was still battling furiously his was now only against one pulse cannon but still finding it hard to get a shot in.
As one shot came very close he rolled to avoid it and then dived as another shot came straight for him. He then pulled up again as another shot missed his rear boosters by mere centimetres.
Then he took a few shots one connected with the pulse cannon and as another pulse shot came out he pulled up sharply but the cannon did not follow.
Then Steven laughed and a wide smile spread across his face as he realized he had impaired the pulse cannons movement.
Now Steven released wave after wave of shots but then suddenly stopped. He was now thinking what if his father was in this destroyer, he would be killed.
Steven knew this shouldn’t bother him after what is father had done but for some reason he couldn’t do it.
Now Steven wasn’t thinking there was a glazed look in his eyes. Then a voice came through his intercom shouting at him.
“LOOK OUT!” The voice yelled.
Steven suddenly jerked himself back to reality but it was two late. A pulse cannon shot connected with his fighter and half of his right wing was blown.
Steven’s fighter went spinning furiously out of control.
He tightened the piloting stick and tried to regain control but to no avail.
A look of shock came over Steven’s face and he let out a loud scream.
After about ten minutes the manic spinning had died down and Steven was attempting to calm himself. He wanted to get back to the battle but he knew even if he did make it he’d be useless and get blasted to pieces in seconds.
Steven hammered his hand on the side of the cockpit. He felt very angry with himself, what had he been doing! He shouldn’t have cared about his father’s death and this was what worried him most. Was he not capable of killing? If this was true then he knew he wouldn’t last long not in this galaxy.
Steven pondered over his thoughts for a few more minutes then lay back trying to relax and getting images of his father laughing at him out of his head.
Eventually he fell into a dreamless sleep. This was for now his only escape from his thought, unfortunately it couldn’t last forever,
