Hey all,
This is an odd one, wanted to see if anyone else has experienced it...
I like doing very compact builds. Getting every module I want in as small a space as possible is satisfying. I also build in such a way that expanding a Station's production is easy too. I.e. I can do a simple copy/paste to increase production of every ware in just a few clicks. This allows me to very quickly ramp up production as needed.
Despite doing compact builds, I do NOT allow overlapping of modules. All placed modules must visually fit, even if allowing module overlap is required sometimesfor placement. I've noticed that some modules seem to have a larger collision mesh (I assume) than actual module size. I.e. A module DOES visually fit fine, BUT I needed to allow overlap for it to snap. Still, the end result is every module being validly placed, with no visual overlaps.
All that said, from time to time, I experience a weird anomaly... I place modules exactly as stated above, and let the build commence. I check back, after the station has been built, and see that some modules are NOT where I placed them. For example, I have a "Tier 3" Station producing, among other things, Advanced Electronics (placed first) and Antimatter Converters. As these modules have similar dimensions, I stacked the latter over the former, so they all lined up nicely. Looked GREAT in the build preview, nice and neat as I like. Going back to this station just now - I was planning to extend production - I noticed that the Antimatter Converter modules are NOT where I placed them, not where they appeared in the Station Design screen. Rather, they seem to have been moved to snap differently. The result is them clipping into the Advanced Electronics modules, rather than sit neatly above them. It's somewhat frustrating and I'm compelled to fix this. Bear in mind I placed THREE of each of these modules in a row, one over the other, and all were placed as desired in the design view. Now however, all three are clipping, not where they appeared in the design view prior to construction.
So, has anyone else seen modules built in a different location than they were placed in the station designer? I.e. perhaps you'd snapped something above another module, but it's been built clipping in to a module it was perfectly clear of in the design view?
Not a huge issue, and fairly rare, just a little irksome as I'll lose production while the modules rebuild for an hour or so.

I've never experienced anything like this and you should probably report it as a bug. With save files and all.Scoob wrote: ↑Thu, 12. Jun 25, 22:23 Hey all,

It's rare enough that I've not really considered that previously. Also, as it often the case, I only have a save from afterwards, not one showing the build before construction of the offending modules was done. With how longs builds can take, I'll often queue up a load of stuff and get on with other things for hours, so it's easy to miss.

Just make a BP when you're designing and save it with a descriptive name, then compare it when you're done. Just delete it if it completes without issue, otherwise you can then submit the BP and save with the completed station.Scoob wrote: ↑Thu, 12. Also note that the station designer can insta build stations, so you can always just test things out there with BPs to see if you can replicate it.
If you still think there are issues, like the BP also displays this weird thing, then you move on to the more annoying option of taking screenshots.

Never seen it personally but my stations aren't made very densely either. If the system started to break down with snapping points very nearby or something I probably wouldn't notice.

I did that a number of times after a prior occurrence, of course each of those built perfectly. Built several stations this time without issue, but noticed it hours later this time, when all modules were built.Raptor34 wrote: ↑Fri, 13. When fixing the latest station, I did noticed that it was genuinely tricky to get the modules to snap correctly. However, I did get them in the right position with no visual overlap. I'm largely done with new station builds now, I'll just be extending existing builds further. I will make a temporary template of and extensions I make though, in case I can trigger it again.
I was hesitant to share my experience. The station designer can be pretty awful when it comes to snap points for some modules. So, you can click to place when a module is perfectly correctly placed as desired, only for it to snap elsewhere afterwards. Usually quite obvious though. If I struggle to get something to snap cleanly, exiting the builder and going back in can often "fix" it. It seems that when placing lots of modules in one go - I usually do it PAUSED so I'm not disturbed - placement can break down a bit. When it starts getting temperamental like this, I'll commit what I've already placed correctly, exit the builder and go back it. Most of the time, the module that wouldn't place properly previously, now will. This doesn't seem to help with the weird rotation after snap issue though sadly.

Re: Station Modules not building where placed.
I use Station Designer for all my builds now, no need to run it paused. I still get the odd (usually) s/m docks flipping upside down for no apparent reason and sometimes a module that clearly fits where I want it to, won't snap into place but if I take the part I'm trying to fit to and place that against the new module it works no problem. Then I have to move the whole structure upto that. It's a pain if you're trying to fit everything into a 2.2.2 box, like you I try to be as compact as possible but if you use Staion Designer to complete your plan in a large box and save it, you can load the whole thing into a small (cheap) box and it works, as long as you don't won't to change anything after, then you have to pay for more space.

Re: Station Modules not building where placed.
Do the modules in question have specific rotation values that seem to get messed up after the station is built?
If the station looks fine after it is built initially but then gets messed up upon save/reload, you may be running into this old issue.
