I think I know why destroyers attack stations at close range
It's got to be the Turret AI. If the destroyers pass the station within turret range then the turrets use AI to keep the target within scope. With ships this is absolutely the correct behaviour, but there should be an exclusion for stations such that turrets don't 'lock on' as station modules are much more heavily armed and much more durable.
I design beautiful, powerful stations that transform your gameplay and look stunning. Now presenting Tachyon Developments - The Terran Collection - now with Community of Planets ship and station technologies!

Easy to test, just remove all short range turrets.
