Fatal Error issue - Seems as though AMD driver updates may have resolved this.

Post by romanlynch »

PC specs
r5-5600x
RX 6650 xt - original gpu, have changed to a rx 6750 xt now
samsung ssd
gpu driver - This started on 25.3.1, I have changed to 25.3.2 and still have this problem

Version 7.5
Mods - Nodan PLus, Remove Dirty Glass, Better Kill Credit, Sector Explore, Orange Mouse, Smooth Mouse Steering, Sector Patrol

I get a fatal error at random times, the game crashes and I have to reboot. I've changed gpu's and drivers, what else can I do?

Please read the very first sticky thread here in this forum and provide all the required information, in particular a DxDiag report and the vulkaninfo.

To add to that, this is what dev CBJ said about this exit code issue in a similar thread:

"We know what the issue is; the game is running out of GPU memory. That's why the DXDiag and [graphics] settings are important, so that we can find out why it's running out of GPU memory in this player's specific case. If it's just that the settings are too high for the GPU to handle, for example, then we can give them a simple solution."

Do I just copy/paste the vulkaninfo here? Looks really long. How do I upload the dxdiag txt?

Thanks. The DxDiag seems all OK but you don't have Windows Error Reporting enabled and so we don't see crash reports at the end of the DxDiag. Hopefully the devs will get some clues from the VulkanInfo and Dumpfiles.

How would I enable the windows reporting? Was that the option inside the game? If so, I enabled that now so when I try and play here in 5 min and it crashes again I'll have that lol.

No, Windows Error Reporting is, as the name suggests, a feature of Windows. It's not something you normally enable or disable yourself. The fact that you are running Windows 10 Pro suggests that you may be using a work PC managed by someone else, in which case they may have disabled it as part of a system policy. If that's the case you won't be able to enable it.

Not a work pc, must've been the key I got years ago when I upgraded. At any rate, I was able to play about 20 min before it crashed again.

I never got this error when I was running 24.x.x drivers. I had tried to roll back to that but it either didn't work or I didn't install correctly. I should be able to go to an older driver correct?

I have win10 pro and have WER disabled via a local group policy for reasons...

gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Error Reporting > Disable Windows Error Reporting = Enabled means disabled

I was able to roll back to 24.12.1 and got 2 days of playing with no issues. I'll be able to play later so hopefully today will be 3 days.

Well it just crashed again. I didn't get past the main menu screen. This sucks. 2 different gpu's, multiple different drivers. Any, I mean any suggestions on what I can try to get this game working again?

We're going to need crashdumps, or at the very least exit codes, to be able to help further.

I can get the dump logs I guess but it's always the same exit codes that I took a screen shot of in my OP. Game cannot recover exit code:1061 and Failure to recover after lost device exit code: 205.

In one of the x4 FB groups I'm in they suggested to use DDU to uninstall the drivers so I tried that. I got a couple hour session in this morning and x4 was fine. My kid got on to play Fortnite and that froze on him. We both play Rust with no issues, X - Beyond the Frontier, Civ 6, Skyrim, Endless Sky and Darkstar One all work with no issues. It's just frustrating and obviously I'm not as computer savvy as others on here so it's doubly frustrating because I don't know what to do to fix it.

It might be interesting to see if the games that are having issues are all Vulkan API based or are selected to use Vulkan. Many games you listed as not having issues would not be on Vulkan but on DirectX.

So the 24.12.1 worked fine for me on X4 but there were still consistent issues with Fortnite. Yesterday I went to 25.5.1 and was able to play X4 for a while and my kid said no issues with Fortnite. He would have multiple crashes every time he played, usually wasn't able to play an entire game without a crash. So hopefully this 25.5.1 driver is good. I'll post again with any changes.

Just for fun, is this happening mostly when you open/zoom/rotate the map? I have very roughly similar hardware (all AMD) and get the same exit code after a while when doing so, almost always at about 13GB of VRAM in use.
