Is there any particular reason why long range scan is a mode and not a key to press? I know it is inherited from rebirth, but still.
Scan mode shows station structure and actually DOES something, which is good. The only purpose of Long range scan is to disable your missiles.
Same goes for Shift + 1 travel mode, by the way.
Would probably make sense to have long range scan as a key, and make it possible to simultaneously enable scan, travel and maybe even SETA.

The number of times I have given an enemy a vicious scan instead of a lethal missile, or have indeed launched a missile when I just wanted to see what was about ...

When you press secondary fire in Long Range Scan, it activates the ... Long Range Scanner and reveals many hidden items. It's sortof a minigame where you have to get the timing right. I like it for immersion, feels like a mode especially for explorers.

Unless I'm missing some functionality, it does seem a bit weird that there's a separate mode for short/long range scans when one is entirely passive and the other entirely active. Except for scanning ships I guess but that has its own binding, so it could still all be contained within one "scanning" mode.

One could ask why there is a separate bind for "scan ship"? Logically, one "Action" button and the "Mode selector" do together allow choosing&doing secondary weapon fire, LRS, and short range scan "actions". (Btw, my "secondary" weapon is almost never a missile; Ion Blaster and Asgard main beam are the usual choices. Granted, scanning with the main beam is very thorough.)
If everybody had controllers, those with 128 buttons each, and support from game for that, then there would be less need for mode switches.

Re: [Feedback] Long range scan --> why is it a mode?
What I meant is that why is it a mode when the only thing it does is overriding one button.
Shift+2 mode does more. It provides highlights for station parts and shows leaks. Shift+3 ... provides a blue outline and prevents you from firing missles.
Then there's Shift+1.
So... it would be reasonable perhaps to collapse Shift+2(station scan) and Shift+3(long range), and perhaps make Shift+1 not a mode, meaning allow scan to continue working.
Those mechanics are inherited from rebirth, and I wasn't sure where Rebirth was going to with it either. In rebirth it was far more annoying, though, especially with gamepad.

No idea. Maybe I'm misremembering but I thought ship scanning only even got a bind sometime after release.jlehtone wrote: ↑Thu, 10. Long range scan fores you out of travel drive. They are also targeted.
