Issue with X4: Foundations - Game Crashes After a While - Improved by BIOS update and Intel update but not a total fix.

Post by MoScA »

Hello,

I am experiencing an issue with X4: Foundations and need assistance. The game stops working after a while of gameplay, and I’ve been unable to resolve it. Below are the details:

Description of the Issue:

The game crashes after a certain period of time, making it unplayable.

I have several .dmp files that I can attach for further investigation.

System Information:

Operating System: Windows 11

Hardware Specs:

Processor: Intel i9-14900KF

GPU: GeForce RTX 4080 Super

RAM: 64GB

Game Version: 7.50

Mods Installed: with and without

Additional Information:

I have over 1000 hours in X4: Foundations, and I've been a fan of the X series since X3, having played all the expansions.

I recently bought a new computer, and I can't play the game on it due to this issue.

The game has always been amazing with its vast options and gameplay, and I would love to continue enjoying it, but this problem is preventing me from doing so.

I’ve tried reinstalling the game and updating my drivers, but the issue persists. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Best regards,

MoScA

Hi. When you say with and without mods, did you mean that to test it you removed all mods and then started a fresh game rather than playing on from a previously modified game save?

Could you also link your DxDiag and VulkanInfo for completeness please. From what you have told us, this *might* be the Intel 13/14th gen cpu issue similar to this report.

Thank you for your reply.

I’ve attached my DxDiag file as requested.

Just to clarify, the issue occurred even before installing any mods. I later added one mod (SW Interworld), but the crashes continued the same way both before and after installing it.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide to help investigate the problem.

Thanks again for your time and support.

Thanks. Looking at your DxDiag:

You have a lot of different sound devices and drivers all operating at the same time. I would disable any you don't usually use in Device Manager, Sound/Audio Devices (right-click on a device in the listing for a disable/enable pop-up).

Your Windows Error Reports show many repeated bluescreen system crashes and those are caused by system hardware or driver issues and not by gamecode.

The few other crashes reported are with MsMpEng.exe which is part of Windows Defender - I would exclude the X4 folders and save folder from Defender checking if I were you.

I would say that the Intel 13/14th gen cpu issue is a strong suspect here as X4 certainly exercises cpus hard and exposes any weaknesses there.

Thanks for the detailed response.

I'll start by disabling the unused audio devices in Device Manager, as you suggested, and I’ll also add the X4 game and save folders to the Windows Defender exclusions list to prevent interference from MsMpEng.exe.

Regarding the bluescreen crashes, I hadn’t realized they were showing up so frequently in the error reports — that’s very helpful. I’ll begin looking into possible hardware or driver-related causes outside the game.

As for the Intel 14th gen CPU issue, I’m starting to believe that might be a major factor here. I’ve read about similar cases online, especially with high-performance CPUs like the i9-14900KF having stability problems in certain games. I’ll try adjusting BIOS settings (like disabling Enhanced Turbo or reducing power limits) and see if that improves the situation.

Thanks again for your help. I’ll report back if I manage to find a stable configuration.

Hi again,

Just wanted to post a quick update — I’ve resolved the crashing issue!

It turns out the problem was related to my motherboard firmware. I updated both the BIOS and the Intel ME Firmware using the latest versions provided by my motherboard manufacturer, and since then, X4: Foundations has been running perfectly stable.

Thank you for all the guidance and suggestions. It really helped me narrow things down and look in the right direction.

Hopefully this helps others who might run into similar issues with 13th/14th gen Intel CPUs.

Thanks again for your support!
