Adding a L/XL Maintenance Bay to existing Wharf
I have started a new game and this time around I want to limit my options to make the game more challenging, interesting and not so easy that you end up bored. My biggest restriction is no player owned Shipyard, I'm happy to buy/cap the capital ships I need/want without having to buy/build everything involved with producing them myself, hoping this will have an impact on NPC stations and general trade.
I've allowed myself the luxury of building a wharf with minimal ship blueprints and Mk1 equipment and done the Zenon Special Equipment research with the aim of building my fleets with capped Zenon ships and overhauling them at the Wharf. I know I could of done this with just a maintenance bay but the problem with maintenance bays is they come with no modding or crafting facilities.
Now my question is: If I add a L/XL maintenance bay to my Wharf, will I be able to overhaul the L/XL ships and use the Wharfs modding bench to upgrade them?

No. There's no modding bench on maintenance bays. Basically even for S/M maintenance bay layout changes and instead of the ship store you get a small booth and no modding bench. Only crafting bench. You can change ship equipment, but you won't be able to mod ships. For ship modding you need fabrication bays. Interestingly you need fabricator for each category you want to mod. Meaning if you only have S/M fab, you won't be able to mod L/XL.
So if you want to stick with your rules you'd need to use npc wharves and shipyards for modding, paying money per roll. 50k for green, 250k for purple. Forgot what the cost was for blue.

Yes, I have exactly that setup at my HQ in most games. I also only buy or steal my ships. My HQ needs S/M fabrication bays to make terraforming drones, but I only need the cheaper L/XL maintenance bays to repair my ships. Can confirm that the modding workbench at the S/M fabrication bay can also be used to mod L/XL ships if the station has L/XL maintenance facilities. Ships do not need to be docked specifically at an L/XL maintenance bay in order to be modded (docked at a pier is fine), however the presence of at least 1 maintenance bay of the appropriate size is essential.

Interesting. So as long as modding bench materialzes, it can use Fabs OR maintenance modules for other classes. Except to make it appear you'd need at least one fab.GCU Grey Area wrote: ↑Thu, 20. Thank you, I had a feeling it might be ok. I now have the L maintenance bay and can also confirm it works as I hoped it would.GCU Grey Area wrote: ↑Thu, 20. Thanks, I didn't know that. I had previously read in a thread about "what is best to build, shipyard or maintenance facility" that building a shipyard would give the ability of modding your ships
free of charge and that you needed to build it the size corresponding to the ship class. I had started the lengthy process of saving enough money for L and XL Yards.
You saved me a lot of credits.

Just to confirm but you know free of charge means no credit cost not no material cost right?Brinnie wrote: ↑Sun, 23. Mar 25, 19:34H34Dru5H wrote: ↑Fri, 21. Yes, I understand that, thanks. No credits on exceptional mods makes a big difference.
However I don't understand "... So as long as modding bench materialises, it can use Fabs OR maintenance modules for other classes. Except to make it appear you'd need at least one fab."
I'd appreciate if you could enlighten me on that one.

Re: Adding a L/XL Maintenance Bay to existing Wharf
Modding bench is present in ship sales room. ("Ship trader area")
Ship sales room appears on your station only when you have a ship fab. Doesn't matter which. S/M, L, XL. It will randomly be added to one of the docking areas.
If you do not have ANY ship fabs, there is no "ship sales" room. If you have maintenance docks only, instead of "ship sale room", you'd get a small booth with a trader, he'll have a crafting bench next to him, and no modding bench.
The game, in general has several special structures that it adds to stations at predefined locations, though you can't decide where they'll appear. Those are "ship sales room", "trader room" and "maintenance booth". Trader room will appear as long as you have a dock. "ship sales" will appear if you have at least one fab. "maintenance" will appear if you have maintenance docks, but no fabs. I'm not sure if it remains available when you install a fab.
That's the idea, basically.

Re: Adding a L/XL Maintenance Bay to existing Wharf
I know from past experience just building Maintenace bays will not give you any modding benches even if you have a 6/1 or 3/1 normal dock to put them on, you will only get a crafting bench. If you build a L/XL fab without a nornal dock, I have no idea where the modding bench may end up or even if you get one at all. But why would you do that in the first place with no ability to dock S/M ships.Brinnie wrote: ↑Mon, 24. Mar 25, 00:19Yes, I understand that, thanks. What I have done is build just a S/M Fab with 1 large storage container and 1 medium Habitat, the Ship Sales room appears in the Fab with Modding and Crafting benches. The Station Trader appears on the other side of the Fab with it's own Crafting bench. There is no need for a normal 6/1 or 6/3 dock in this setup as you have all the S/M parking space you need for now. I then added a L Maintenance bay to service any passers by and configure my own captured ships and found, as I hoped, I can use the Modding bench in the S/M Fab to mod L ships at the same station. I'm guessing when I get an XL Maintenance bay added to the same station, I will be able to mod ships there too. Unless you want to build your own L/XL ships, this is all you need and will save you a shed load of grinding time at the start of each new game.

Ok, it was just me not understanding that Fab meant shipyard.
Thanks.
Thanks.
