I'm coming back to X4 for nth time after my last attempt 6 years ago and am enjoying it more this time around. Web searches have answered the majority of my questions, but there are a couple of things I'm still stuck on.
I've gotten my PHQ up and I hope I have the autotrading thing figured out to supply it for research projects. I've purchased blueprints for both types of satellites, but I can't find a production module for either of them. Somewhere on the web I got the impression that I have to buy blueprints for a whole ship bay. That can't be right, can it? I may be able to scrape together $2 mil, but the Terran rep wants $45 mil just for the small maintenance bay. That seems absurd just for making consumables.
You need to buy a recipe from any faction representative. Satellites can be made on equipment docks, ship building modules OR at AUX ships, although keeping AUX stocked with materials is annoying.
AUX is the cheapest option, you can get one for 10-20 mil. Cheapest EQ dock blueprint is 30 million, S/M fab is something like 150, depenidng on faction, and so on. AUX also can provide satellites to all ship classes, but like I said - supplying it with materials is a hassle.
I strongly recommend to use closed loop recipes for it. (Requires Avarice DLC)
And yes. Satellites are not normal items, they're assembled on demand in a ship.
