Could not see an idea and/or features section of the forum, so just posted here. Please move if that is appropriate.
So what I would like to see to save myself (and im sure many others) headache. I would like to see an option on my stations (possibility in the information tab or logical overview or both, tbh wherever is appropriate) that allows me a slider from 0% to 100% for how much storage is to be globally allocated for that station. I guess you would need one per storage type. Then all the individual wares allocation and the station manager when set to automatic behave as if the station only that percentage of storage installed on the station. The station would behave exactly as it does now except as if it only had x% of that total storage type in the station.
You could use the Filled Capacity bar on the information tab and be able to set a maximum there.
Why do I want this?
Well there are many reasons I want to build large storage, maybe for the future, maybe I refit a stations use and it no longer requires the amount of storage. Maybe for looks, like symmetry. Regardless it is well known that have large storage in station means you have to have large budgets, even when you set the station to only trade internally where no cash changes hands. The manager behavior seems to require the budget to behave properly.
With this feature I can set the storage to 10% when my funds are low and build it up as progress through the game, without having to manually micromanage every ware in the station.
It is just you mothballing part of the station without having to go to the effort of removing it.
I think this is, hopefully, an easier to implement solution to the problem of large storage and the way station automation works. Making it much easier to manage the storage allocation by having the micro level auto managed but setting a macro level.

Re: Station Global Storage Usage Allocation
Although not in-game, the tool in my signature calculates the required storage and avoids over assignment of input/intermediate ware allocation to the storage you have. Unfortunately I don't have a manual % for each ware, as it would require very complex setup, but the goal is to minimize operating budget. I get that it does not solve the micromanagement issue.
There's a save game import as well; currently you need 7-Zip and manually extract the archive, but my next version you won't have to do this.
Likely to tide you over until a possible implementation of your idea.
