[Suggestion/Controls] [Suggestion/Controls] Fine-grained look-around controls for joystick

Post by azaghal »

When flying the ship with mouse and keyboard, the player can easily use the mouse itself to look around the cockpit by holding down the "Camera Mouse Look" input control. Alternative to this is to use the camera input controls (by default bound to keyboard numpad).

The advantage of "Camera Mouse Look" is that it provides fine-grained control, allowing player to look at specific spots around the cockpit, or to track objects as they pass by. At the same time, the view resets to cockpit center once the player has released the input control. With camera input controls it is more or less an all-or-nothing situation - the view will move all the way to maximum possible position while the input control is held, and snap back to center once released.

However, when using the joystick, player is limited to using the camera input controls, and is left without fine-grained view control.

It would be nice if some additional options/input controls were introduced for the camera controls while flying the ship. For example:
  • An option that disables automatic snapping to cockpit center _unless_ the input control is released roughly around the cockpit center itself. No additional button required, but forces player to recenter manually.
  • An input control that disables snapping to cockpit center while held. Additional button mapping, but lets player quickly look around and recenter during combat maneuvers.
  • Ability to use analog axis on joysticks for looking around the cockpit.
Due to differences in joystick models (positioning and availability of buttons, hats, and analog sticks), it would be nice if all three options were implemented (for example, I currently use the 8-way hat on Thrustmaster T.16000M to look around the cockpit - and the analog stick on Thrustmaster TWCS is reserved for strafing - at the same time I already struggle to get all the controls I want readily available mapped to the HOTAS).
