Optimisation of the game

Post by Tonbar4ik »

Hello, I have a problem. At any graphics settings the game loads the processor in such a way that the heating temperature can reach 95 ° + while the load on the processor varies from 30-80% occasionally, there is no permanent stop at 100%. Other games (star citizen, no mans sky) do not heat up the processor like this. I additionally did a series of streestests in Aida to see if the cooling is coping, but the tests showed that everything is in spoil. But despite this, the game x4 manages to heat up the CPU regardless of the graphics settings be it low or high, the result is the same. I even tried to change the distance of drawing scanner and radar, did not help. Can you tell me if it can be fixed as something besides the limitations of the processor itself by lowering the frequencies?

My device:
Laptop - HP Victus 16
i5-11400 H
RTX 3050 Ti 4gb
16 gb Ram
512 gb ssd

X4 is one of those games that can easily get primarily CPU bound due to running the entire universe simulation in realtime (unlike many other games where the game "cheats" and only runs whichever part you happen to view at the moment). I don't know what the limits for your laptop CPU are and how good its cooling is, but unless your stresstests may not be a good indicator depending on how long you ran them compared to your usual X4 game session (or however long it takes for the throttling to kick in).

If there is a way to help (i.e.: figure out of your situation isn't just the usual "too much going on for the CPU to handle easily" or some other issue that may actually be troubleshot), it may be helpful if you could tell what your savegame state is; like is the CPU getting thermal throttled from the get-go with a fresh start, or are you playing on an older save for example. In the latter case you could try and start a fresh game to see if your laptop exhibits the same behaviour or if it takes longer to start throttling.

Other usual troubleshooting steps are important too: if you play a modded game it may make sense to see if any add noticably to your CPU load and check if running the game without them could improve your performance. If you run a lot of mods, even small impacts add up.

Aside from potential issues and fixes with the game, double check if your laptop is in good order (particularly the fans and intakes, those can dust up real quick).

Regarding the cpu utilization not being pegged at 100%, it's likely because X4 is not designed to use all available cores on modern processors. The cores that do get used, however, will be extremely stressed. So this could result in the situation you are encountering where your cpu temps are excessive despite less than maximum overall utilization.

Unfortunately, another factor to consider is laptops generally don't provide adequate built-in cooling to handle high demanding games, even self-proclaimed gaming laptops. I'm not saying this to cast judgment. I also game on a laptop. As previously mentioned in the earlier response, make sure your fans and heatsinks are unobstructed and clear. Also, consider using a cooling pad to supplement the airflow. I have been very satisfied with the IETS GT500, but I understand there are newer and competing models that have received even better reviews.

Lastly, you may want to consider disabling "boost" on your cpu. This will not increase performance. But it may keep your temperatures under control. In many circumstances, games don't benefit noticeably from the temporary clock speed increases provided from boost. But, in contrast, temperatures climb dramatically when boost is enabled. So many gamers opt to disable boost in exchange for improved stability.
