[Suggestion/QoL] Morale column and sorting by morale in Personnel Management menu

Post by azaghal »

When player is assigning personnel for various roles in the empire, very often it is useful to take into the account morale instead of the main or combined (main + morale) skill. For example:
  • Many missions require assigning personnel as pilots, marines, or managers to destination NPC station with minimum morale requirements. Therefore the player needs to take into account both morale and the main skill (with main skill sometimes playing less of a role - see the point below).
  • When improving personnel main skills through use of piloting and management seminars, it makes more sense to pick personnel with high morale and low main skill over those that have high main skill nad low morale, since it is harder to improve the morale than the main skill (due to lack of morale-improving seminars and RNG/time involved). Using higher level seminars on low-morale personnel is a major waste since morale will be the main limiting factor in improving efficiency (and assignment possibilities) of such personnel.
Player will most often use the "Personnel Management" menu to pick personnel for a particular task. While the menu does provide ability to sort the personnel by the combined skill (role-dependant, takes into account main skill and morale), it is not possible to sort personnel by morale itself (either in addition to combined skill or as main sorting criterion).

Additionally, although the morale level can be reviewed by expanding personnel details or selecting personnel from the list, this has to be done on one-by-one basis, which becomes tedious very quickly once the player starts to build up the ship assets (because personnel has tendency to grow even faster).

To make decision-making process less tedious and easier to handle, it would be beneficial if the following changes were made to the "Personnel Management" menu:
  • Show "Morale" as an additional column in the table (in addition to the "Skill" column).
  • Allow player to sort personnel by "Morale".
  • When sorting by the "Skill" value, always use "Morale" as secondary sorting criterion (and vice-versa).
P.S.
Using morale as secondary criterion for sorting might already be the case, I am not 100% sure on it.

I voted yes. It's already a well known and widely adopted strategy to source NPC workers from builder crews so that their morale has been developed in advance of whatever new role they'll be serving, be it captain, manager, marine, or service crew. This suggestion would greatly aid in the repeated task of searching for the best candidates (highest morale).

Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

X4 is a journey, not a destination. Have fun on your travels.

Funny thing is... I did not think in this way for quite a long while. It is only current play-through (4th one, currently on day 7 without SETA, although I take my sweet time in general) that I am actually looking a bit more closely at some of the more "meta" parts of the game. This mainly happened during this run when I essentially wasted a couple of 3-star seminars on pilots trying to build up advanced trade fleet. I left the pilots to do fill shortages trading to reach the required morale levels in a "natural" way, but... Couple of hours in I realised this isn't going to happen (so started searching for high morale crew to take over instead)... Heck, even tried assigning those 3-star (base skill) pilots as service crew to try to level up their morale, and it did not help much (probably should check up on them again).

It kinda feels a bit counter-intuitive that you end-up having to pick up regular service crew to take care of your piloting tasks (after some seminar pumping), but here we are. :)

P.S.
And, just to emphasize, lots of these suggestions have often been mentioned by others - I don't think I am coming up with anything particularly revolutionary smart here. Probably just a lot of low-hanging fruit.

I'll also like an easier way to deal with crew tbh, the current needing to comm them and subsequently load their backgrounds is a major source of temporary performance issues. Like let me send an email instead...
