Low FPS Issue on a High-Performance Laptop (ASUS TUF Gaming A17, RTX 4060)

Post by windssord »

Hello everyone! For some reason, in the game, whether on minimum or maximum settings, the FPS doesn’t go above 30. I’ve tried everything. On both my old laptop and my new one, the FPS still doesn’t go above 30. On the old laptop, I clearly remember last year the FPS was above 60-70. Then, for some reason, it dropped to 30 FPS. Occasionally, it goes up to 50, but that’s very rare. I’ve watched all the guides on the internet. I’ve tried disabling all mods, etc. But when I enable S.U.V., my FPS drops to 1-2. Last year, it was fine—even when it dropped, it was only to 30-35. Now it’s completely unplayable.

I have an ASUS TUF Gaming A17 FA707NV laptop with a HexaCore AMD Ryzen 5 7535HS processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU with 8GB of VRAM.

Kind people, please help me out!

I had issues lately i'm not sure if they're related to the new windows update.

2024-11 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 23H2 for x64 (KB5045935)

But i reformatted my computer and didn't install that update now it runs perfectly again.

(Note: Could very well not be that either.)

I don't have this update. I also read somewhere online that I should try removing this update. However, that was about the game Cyberpunk 77, but I decided to try removing it anyway.

Sounds to me like the source of your problems is the S.U.V mod (whatever that is?)
Has that mod been updated to be compatible with whatever version of the X4 game you are running (you dont mention if you are still on 7.10, or using the new 7.5 beta)
Last point .. Disabling a mod is not enough to eradicate the effects of a mod, you have to completely uninstall all files the mod installed, as some of them may have overwritten vanilla game files (or, even if they dont overwrite original game files, they may load later than vanilla game files and replace them in game) and still cause problems for the game, if they are not compatible with the latest update to the game.

Only way to be certain is Uninstall the whole game.
After that delete everything in the games installation folder that could be left over from mod installations files.
Re-install the game, and verify files.

The game should now run as intended (unless you have a very high screen resolution set, combined maybe with very demanding anti-aliasing settings plus Volumetric fog etcetera).

Now introduce your S.U.V mod, and try the game again - Did the problem come back again?, if so there's the problem. Uninstall it (dont just disable it) until the mod author updates it to be compatible again.

If all of the above fails to help ..
Read Imperial Good's first post guide to X4 Performance Troubleshooting sticky topic in the Tech support forum. I dont think he has left any stone unturned in that topic.

You misunderstood me. By SETA, I mean the Singularity Engine Time Accelerator (SETA). That said, I tried what you suggested, but it still didn't help—there's no FPS improvement. I also noticed in the Windows 10 Task Manager that the game isn't running on the primary graphics driver but on the integrated one.

I tried forcing it to run through the Windows 10 Graphics Settings, but it didn't help. I also tried configuring it through the Nvidia Control Panel, but there was still no improvement. I honestly don't see any difference between ultra and the lowest settings in the game itself. I removed all mods and reinstalled the game, but it's still the same issue.

No, I dont think I misunderstood you, there is no mention of SETA in the opening post. I do understand what SETA is.
But you said ..

If the game is running through the Integrated GPU instead of the Dedicated GPU, then that would cause the issues you are seeing with FPS.

Try downloading your NVidia Drivers installer again, but before using it also grab DDU to do a clean uninstall of your current Graphics drivers.
Then switch off WiFi/Internet connection.
Run DDU to get rid of old drivers.
Then after a reboot of the machine use the NVidia drivers installer.
After that you can switch your WiFi/Internet back on, and see if the game uses the NVidia card dedicated GPU properly.

One thing I am not used to is I have an Optimus configured laptop (old style Optimus), maybe you have an Advanced Optimus setup, which has a MUX Switch?. If it has maybe you need to use the MUX Switch to get the game to use the NVidia GPU?, I dont know for sure how it goes with those machines.

Anyway see if just the clean removal and re-install of GPU drivers helps first.

Beyond this I am not sure what to suggest, if you have tried everything I mentioned so far, the game should be fine.
That machine of yours is much better than mine, and I get between 40-110 FPS (40 is worst case landed at a station with the map open, 110 is flying around a fairly empty sector)

This discussion is best continued in the Tech Support Forum so I'll move the thread there. The OP should also include the information requested in the sticky at the top of the T.S forum.
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

Yes, I do have the option to disable Optimus, and I’ve done so. The built-in laptop screen is always connected to the dedicated GPU. Could you recommend any settings for the game or the control panel?

For now, I’ll try reinstalling the GPU driver and then running the game and a benchmark test through FurMark. Specifically, I’ll run the benchmark first and then try the game. Could it be that G-Sync is forcibly enabled in my GPU settings?

Once I’ve reinstalled the drivers, I’ll update you.

After reinstalling the graphics card driver, the FPS increase was minimal: from 30 FPS to 55 FPS. And that's on the lowest settings.

Hm, well if 55 FPS is an average, thats pretty good for a laptop .. Depends what your game settings are :

For my machine as a comparison, here is what I have set in my config.xml

I find a lower screen resolution of 1600x900, not using volumetrics, and limiting Anti-aliasing (Currently in 7.5 beta X4 I am using DLSS Balanced), shadows off and SSAO off - gives my machine good performance. You will not be so limited, but try really low settings for everything, and work up to acceptable performance. Its the only way us laptop users can find the sweet spot for settings, we cant expect to use the same settings as a desktop uses. Incidently if you are using NVidia Geforce Experience, and its recommended game settings for X4, they will be wrong. Those settings are crowd sourced from other players .. using desktops. So using them will eventually burn out your chips solder as the game will be creating a lot of heat on your laptop which it can not cope with.

But as Nanook says, for anyone to help you further, the more technical among us will need the usual stuff as posted in the sticky topic viewtopic.php?t=402324
In your case a DXDiag report and VulkaInfo would be good.

Sounds to me though that you may be expecting your laptop to be capable of desktop performance, which it will never be. Even people with decent Desktop machines can be brought to their knees with this game, its just very demanding on CPU speed (ghz per core, not how many cores it has, 4-6 cores with high ghz per core say above 5ghz is good), Cache and RAM speed, and motherboard data handling throughput between chips.

Your NVidia 4060 will never be fully utilized by this game, as its not really a GPU bound game, its all about the "strength/speed/agility" of your CPU.

A Desktop with a Ryzen 7800X3D is pretty good for X4 due to its large on chip cache, I think laptops are just starting to get the mobile version of that chip at a premium price, but even then its not going to be as good as the Desktop version. Have a read of this topic viewtopic.php?t=427248&start=340 .. but bare in mind most folk there are talking desktop performance.

I’ve tried everything. Reinstalled Windows, reinstalled the game 100 times, disabled all unnecessary services, downloaded optimization software for gaming, and removed all mods. The only thing I haven’t tried is overclocking the processor. But that’s problematic since my BIOS doesn’t have overclocking options at all.

In other games where both the CPU and graphics are important, like EVE Online, Elden Ring, Tarkov, and many others, I get FPS ranging from 100 to 144 on high settings. In some cases, during massive battles in EVE (e.g., in sectors with over 10,000 ships), FPS might drop to 40. But it’s clear why that happens, and I don’t complain — in some extreme cases, it even goes down to 5 FPS.

The main issue is that in X4: Foundations, the FPS won’t go higher, no matter the settings. Whether on ultra, high, or the lowest settings, the FPS doesn’t go above 55. The difference between ultra and low settings is just 5 FPS.

Could something be wrong on my end?
Here’s the laptop’s name again, just in case: ASUS TUF Gaming A17, CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 7535HS with Radeon Graphics, GPU - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU. The monitor supports 144 Hz, G-Sync, and Adaptive Sync. The RAM is 16 GB DDR5 (I’m upgrading soon to 32 GB, 2 sticks of DDR5 at 6000 MHz).

I’m also willing to provide remote access to my laptop for professionals to check it out—just in case I’m doing something wrong myself. However, this would be strictly for system diagnostics and problem inspection, with no permission to download or install anything.

In your case a DXDiag report and VulkaInfo would be good.
I wont be able to help further, but for more technical people to help you need to provide what has been asked for.

But ..

Just occurred to me to ask .. Do you have an FPS Cap set for X4 in the NVidia Control Panel.
Or do you have any other kind of FPS Cap in something else, like a performance app or something strange running in the background?

If the answer is yes and the only problem is the game not going above that FPS, then thats solved.

But otherwise, anyone helping further is still going to need you to read that linked sticky topic and provide the DXDiag and VulkanInfo

In the Nvidia Control Panel, there is a limit set to 134 FPS. However, I have already tried disabling this, along with the G-Sync feature and any other settings. Here are the DXDiag and VulkanInfo files.
