I was playing Terran Cadet and gave myself a challenge not to leave Sol. Some Yaki were flying around and I thought to myself "I sure would like a faster ship". I took a Kurokami. Ok. I tried to take a Moreya but to my shock some Yaki boarded it before me. I didn't know they could do that.
So I keep fighting and I keep taking ditched ships. I have to get three Moreyas to ditch in order to collect one.
So I have two kurokamis and two Moreyas. I head to the Terran Equipment dock to get crew and get parched up.
For the two kurokamis and one Moreya everything was fine. For the second Moreya I was not able to hire crew. Why not?
Well, it turns out that that the ship had three prisoners on it. A boarding pod with three Yaki had tried to take the ship back before I could get it but I must have gotten it just in time. Now they are my prisoners.
I saved and set them to work like employees and there were no issues. It seems they are reformed. Then I reloaded because it is rare to have prisoners.
Very funny happenstance

Indeed, those three seats are being "wasted" by not having them filled by service crew. But I would definitely do the same and keep the prisoners. Are you able to transfer them to other ships via the transfer crew command?
Beware the pirate spacesuit patrols!

Yep, the Yaki board.
It's a shame other factions don't.
Some early games, I try and get this situation on purpose - leaving an uncapped ship until a Yaki boarding party come along - then claim it before they get there, and they'll be converted to prisoners.
Decent level pilots and marines for very early.
Would be great if the upcoming updates or DLC expand the Yaki somewhat.
Regards
Edit: Oh, and you can indeed convert them to Crew and transfer as normal.
