Possible to cheat past the frustrating campaign missions?

Post by Sehnsucht1985 »

I bought Rebirth on day 1, but have still not even come close to completing the campaign. The fight missions are fine, but the hacking, station building (I read ahead, I never actually got there) and possibly others are not. I finally finished a hacking mission this week, only to instantly be greeted by another. Gave it a few goes, but after I completed it I was under attack by PMC ships, and just before I reached the highway to escape, I died. Full on rage quit after that where I uninstalled and removed the game from my library. Obviously that was a knee jerk reaction; now I wonder if I can skip past these missions somehow, so I can experience the story to its conclusion?

Otherwise I'll just attempt to play the VR version instead, once again, since it comes with all dlc zones which I don't have for the original. It doesn't have the campaign, which is the main negative point.
TC: All plots completed. ATF Tyr and Odin successfully boarded. Aran found and boarded.

In my opinion, the missions of the main plot are straight forward, introducing you to game features and awarding you good equipment. Hacking with a drone is annoying, but can be done if you were training using the mini games beforehand. I always escaped the PMC ships pursuing me, so you most likely had bad luck at that moment. Note the old saying: Save early, save often!

Building the (only one) station is easy, because you get the station builder and a lot of material for free. Only one of the materials is hard to get - or

I heard from several that the station building often stops because no mats get delivered to the station. It's the age old problem in X games where you eventually have to do everything yourself because the NPC cannot, or will not. I don't care nearly enough about this game to waste hours upon hours doing manual trade runs (the interface is a far cry from what we have in X4, so it'd be a massive pain).

I've started playing Rebirth VR; at least I don't have to unlock the other sectors there. But even in VR, the ship restrictions where you can only fly the aptly named Skunk rears its ugly head right away. There's just nothing to work towards, save for a few upgrades which are easily obtained (better engines, shields etc). Went off on a bit of a tangent there, ahem.

I believe I just have to accept that I will never complete the story missions in this game. And indeed, never get anything of substance done such as purchase capital ships or construct stations (because what for - can't fly them anyway nor even stand on the bridge of one!). Thanks for replying though, I'll quit my rant now.

You HAVE TO do manual runs, because station admins only can buy and sell in the same system. When you build the drone facility in DeVries, there is no market for either. If you later build stations in Albion or Omicron Lyrae, it works much better.

I never purchased a capital ship in the game. There are enough opportunities to board them instead. Although I must commit that it IS a tedious job, because you have to damage much of them to get the boarding resistance down. OTOH purchasing ships and then delivering all the necessary material to the wharves pays out well.

You might want to try some mods like viewtopic.php?t=374964&hilit=mini+game

My first run through of Rebirth was vanilla, But for my second I added various mods for the things I found the most annoying. Like the mini game.

Damn, that sucks. Well as far as capital ships go, I'm seriously considering giving it another go now and acquiring one. There's a few that look interesting, on Roguey's site. Guess I need a mod to be able to see the action though, from the ship (by default you can only like, stay in the cargo room or something - wth kind of game design is that). I did like flying around the Toride sector, and apparently there's lots of enemies to fight there.

I think I've decided to just give up entirely on the campaign, but I may just install some mods. Not like the game is ever getting an update again with its uh, modest user base.

Edit: https://steamdb.info/app/570420/charts/ that one player the last 24h is me, haha. 20 for the non-VR. It's sort of a shame, because the VR edition really is worth playing - there's so few space sims that work natively in VR.

Edit 2: grinded my way to a Balor, found it to be kinda useless, used Notepad++ to cheat in 70 million, bought an Arawn, watched it suicide against a Xenon station after a grueling 1 hour or so zig zag flight to the destination. I finally got X Rebirth out of my system. Sector exploration (Toride) is far better than in X4 - everything else X4 does better.
