For a pilot being able to see all around your ship at a given moment is very important. Especially when navigating or trying to figure out where the hell those missiles are. It has struck me as really odd that they seem to be missing... i mean not just from X4 but space games in general.
Obviously you can't just have big protruding mirrors, they'd be wiped out in seconds but it would be nice if cameras were added that could be seen at a glance from the cockpit. These camera's should show as a minimum:
1. Rear View
2. Left-Rear View
3. Right-Rear View
It would be ideal if the viewing angles did not overlap (because that would be redundant).
On a related matter some of these areas get quite congested and there appears to be no traffic rules, leading to all kinds of mayhem. It's been a while but I remember in this game, once upon a time that gate travel was russian roulette and there was a risk that you would smash into another vessel and explode, but there's also no or little traffic management around ships and stations either. Now I'm not saying we should introduce anything serious here... but a one way system through the repair docks would be great as would an "un-mooring priority", as an example, akin to the docking permission.

I agree with this and add the suggestion to give those cameras the ability to zoom. The ability to zoom a camera to identify something in the distance is extremely useful. One of the most difficult things about coming back into the X universe from playing Space Engineers is the lack of view cameras. I always added cameras to my ships and rovers for docking and reversing at the very least. Subnautica had nice cameras around the Cyclops submarine, too. I never piloted that thing from first person view because it was so limited (even while being less limited than the first person views in this game).
Third person view is also too clumsy. I should be able to hold a button to switch mouse input from steering to camera aiming instead of having to move one of my hands away from the normal flight controls and dedicate it entirely to camera movement via a bunch of buttons. Simply adjusting the view shouldn't require sacrificing half of my flight controls.
Another lack of view/control is in turrets. Large ships have gunnery stations but no way to actually take control of any turrets. We want to be able to shoot our guns sometimes, even if they're not the main guns.

Some (one? all?) previous X games had configurable monitors. Things like target view and missile view. Would like to have those back. Would also like to see the communications video feed on a different window than the one we use for information of the target.
Brute force and ignorance solves all problems, just not very efficiently.
If brute force isn't working, then you aren't using enough.

The most annoying thing is when you are in fight and you need those infos but they are covered in talking heads. In X3s that was annoying when you remote controlled your ship and a talking head disrupted it and it had to be re enabled. Also the talking head does not help to identify who is the messenger exactly in a quick way.
The advertising was that "we talk to NPCs" and "simplify menus" and now we have over complicated and not so useful features.
X to X3 is MENU SUPERIOR!
