Firemodes need an overhaul

Post by 0x4141414141414141 »

There are two issues right now with how firing modes work.
  1. Bug when switching firing mode: currently, the first shot fired follows the previous firing mode ("aim at cursor" or "fire weapons"). The side effect of this is that if you are trying to take precise aim at something (e.g. a lockbox lock) and you decide to shoot with "aim at cursor", if your previous shot was also not an "aim at cursor" shot, your fire will be aimed at the center of the screen. And vice versa.
  • Manual mode (aka "fire at cursor") does not consider a convergence point for weapons: currently, when you use manual mode weapons point straight ahead. If you have ships that have weapons on spread along the horizontal axis, your shots will deviate from the target. The only way you can get the weapons to converge at a point is if you aim on top of an object. This does not work if you are leading your shots; you will be aiming at "space" and the gimbals will not activate. What ship weapons need is a default convergence point (configurable, maybe); or the AI needs to be smart enough to understand you are leading your shots. ex video: https://steamusercontent-a.akamaihd.net ... 8BCBF8074/

The consequence of #2 is that manual mode is basically useless in combat except for particualr ships with centered weapons or weapons that are mounted very close.
