Ship crosshair/reticule remaining on screen after game exit - Resolved, external setting.

Post by mintyjones »

I played the game for the first time earlier today. I exited the game through the menu, and left my computer. However, upon coming back to my PC, I note that the crosshair from the game remains on screen above all windows on my desktop.

I tried restarting my PC, but upon restart, the crosshair is still there. I've run the game since, but it hasn't made any difference. There are no noticeable issues with the game itself and it seems to shutdown correctly with no errors or crashes.

Game version: v7.0 (534380)
No Mods
This is all running on a brand new system only built last week

DxDiag report

Would really like this attended to as quickly as possible, as I don't want this burned onto my monitor, and I need to use my computer for other things.

It's probably just a case of your monitor being susceptible to image persistence. If you look that up there are some things you can do to make it go away faster, as it's not typically permanent like the burn-in of old monitors.

Unfortunately if you have a screen that does this, in my experience it will keep doing it. It most likely does it in other cases too, but things with a high contrast (like a bright reticle on a dark space background) tend to make it more obvious when it happens.

I appreciate the suggestion, but I don't think it's that, it's that the graphic still remains on screen (not burnt in, but will be if it persists to exist) - I only played the game for the first time for 15 minutes. I've used this monitor for a few years and nothing like this has ever happened before. In fact, I've been using a number of monitors over the last 25 years, and I've never seen anything like this happen.

So, to be clear, I don't think this is something that's persisting because it's already burnt in, but that the graphic is "physically" existing on my system outside of the game after it has been closed.

EDIT: @lamefox your suggestion did make me research a different angle. This led me to look at my monitor settings and I realised that I had bumped my monitor side buttons (Acer Nitro) and had inadvertently switched on the "Action" gaming mode, which in itself superimposes a cross-hair graphic on the screen - not an X4 game component at all. Just a total coincidence. I had no idea, and now I feel just a little bit silly. Apologies for my panic and thank you for pointing me in another direction which led to the solution.
