[suggestion] Select player station icons

I'm sure this has been through before, but to bring it back up for discussion without a necro...

The automatic naming and icon system for player built stations works very well, however there are times it would be nice to put a personal stamp on things and make the map view of a busy area easier to read at a glance. The main case, for my playstyle, would be trade stations that are just warehouses for player faction only, but get lost in a sea of trade station icons when setting up fine tuned distribution hubs. The trade icon is considered important by the game and so scales up as the map zooms out. A warehouse/storage icon that remains scaled with factories would solve this nicely and having it optional means no-one loses a view they want in the current arrangement.

tl;dr allow us to change the icon on a station as we can the name from the usual set, and add a warehouse and/or storage icon to the pot :)

I agree with you on player stations, sometimes the utility of auto station icon assignment isn't simple for player stations.
Further, the map zoom +/- and display fade in/out has seemed to have crept a bit where a lot of info requires closer and closer zoom to see.

Even if icon choices for player stations isn't practical or somesuch, it would be nice if at least we could tag a station to present it's icon as a large variant.


One part of the auto icons (and naming) assignement for NPC stations which is counterproductive is (at least with player built stations that are relinquised to NPC factions) when making a more advanced station for the NPC than they typically build themselves.

Also with scrap related factories, they seem to very easily loose any clue in name or icon that there is a scrap module there. Scrap plus one S storage IIRC will become just a 'factory', with more modules it can become more specifically named, but then also still probably will have no ref that there is a scrap nozzle there or whatever.

Not a big deal if relying on NPC to sift through the stations, but for player to manually trade or locate specific types of stations it's a PITA with these names and icons largely incapable of defining complex stations... and AFAIK we are unable to search the universe for stations which contain a certain mudule.

..so, another case where a user defined icon choice (at least) would help for map browsing.

I agree it would be nice to be able to override these. For instance, in the past I've made missile-heavy defence platforms. To improve their storage I added an actual storage module and set it to buy the wares it needs for missiles. Then it became a trade station...
