7.0 - new keybinding options are neat, but still lightyears away from X3 keybinding options

Post by Perkel »

I noticed in patch new keybinding options. Got hyped because I could finally set up my pad as i want.

Tested it and nope. Can't keybind my pad as i want. Still game dissalows multi-button keybinds, no hold, no double presses no nothing.

In X3 i could bind my pad to such degree that i was more efficient on pad than on keyboard and mouse. X4 years later is still way behind X3 on that front. Please ego add ability to freely keybind stuff. Make sure to also include double presses, holds, modes etc.

Here is my years upon years ago showing how X3 could be played with pad:

I absolutely LOVED the X3 series. I had my control kit configured really well for X3 TC and AP, and I spent a ridiculous amount of hours playing them. When X4 came out, I decided to hold-off until it was a bit more "polished". Well, "Life Happened', and I've been out of the X universe (and gaming in general) for about 5 years now. But I finally bit the bullet and grabbed X4 w/ the Timelines update during Steam's summer sale.

So I'll be climbing that familiar, old keybind hill soon myself. Well, at least I will after I figure out how to get my trusty old flight controller setup (X-65f / Saitek Pedals / 2x TM MFDs / Track-IR 5) connected and the ancient programming software working with my new PC (Core-i7 14th gen / Windows 11 pro).

I'm really kind-of dreading the hassles I expect to run into when I start installing the controller programming apps. Logitech bought Saitek years ago, and afaik, there hasn't been any dev resources put into updating or re-writing the "Smart Technology" software that the X-65f needs. Hell, I had problems getting those apps to install & run properly under Win 8. I doubt it will be any easier years later, under Win 11. I haven't done any gaming that required my flight kit in years, so it's possible the Thrustmaster and Track-IR apps have become abandonware, and I'm pretty sure my Ideazon/Steelseries FANG gamepad is extinct, too.

At any rate, I'll keep looking for an up-to-date list of X4's default bindings, so I can figure out the best mapping to the physical controls. I'll probably find a layout I can start with here on the forums.

Hi, when you say pad do you mean the keypad, gamepad or an external pad?
Regarding multibutton keybinds, does it not let you use the 2 modifier keys?

I would also like to see the hold and the double press features, one thing I have noticed that X4 lets me do and x3 didn't is the ability to bind left, right mouse and the scroll wheel to different functions when used together with the modifier keys.
X3 (and X4 if I am not mistaken before the latest patch) wouldn't take any notice of the modifiers when used in conjunction with them.

I believe the two command wheels are new too.

I have not had "fancy things" nor "pads". I had X52 HOTAS (original Saitek) for all X3 and some X4. I did still use keyboard for something.

During X4 I have gradually replaced the single device (X52) with three separate (USB) devices: joystick, throttle, and rudder pedals.
AFAIK, the X3 was limited to one device, so I would need some software to make the three look like one for X3.

The X4 is not limited to one device, but it seems to have 64 buttons per device limitation. (128 buttons and 8 analog axes per device should be technically possible. Some games support only 32 buttons per device ...)

When I was mapping the new throttle with X4 version 6.x, one button (number 35) did not register at all. It does now, in version 7.0.
Furthermore, game did register some buttons as "D-Pad this or that", rather than "number ...". Haven't checked whether 7.0 did change that.

I did use the X52 without any software for a while (on Windows 7). There was still Logitech software for it last summer -- Windows 10 version.

Thanks, Brinnie. I'll check that out.
I just now plugged in my old T.Flight Hotas X, and I'm wrestling with the in-game control options trying to get the throttle axis working.
That's BIG fun, with an 8 year old asking "Can we play yet?" every 30 seconds!

You are welcome, mind you it is probably outdated info.

To the kid's question, the answer is simple:

"Yes of course, by the time you are 12" :)

Interestingly enough, it has support for toggle switches, which even Star Citizen does not have (at least it didn't half a year ago). My Virpil T-50 CM3 throttle has a group of neat toggle switches which I'd love to use in SC, but simply does not work. Tried binding one of them to the container magnet not expecting it to work, and it works perfectly. That was in patch 5 or 6. I personally have had a better experience with X4 than with X3 with regards to keybinds, but peoples use cases differ vastly. That said, I always found X3 to be far ahead of its time with its input support.

Don't know if this is the right thread, but it seems so.

Can one bind a key to "station overview" aka "logical overview " look ? I'm tired of clicking right and selecting the option everytime.
