Improved Spacesuit Scanner?

When I attempted the spacesuit scan it gives an 'use IMPROVED spacesuit scanner' I have yet to find that in any station. ANy ideas?

Split from a very old and irrelevant thread. There is just the one spacesuit scanner in vanilla, but it may have to be bought to go into inventory first (not sure about that last bit). The suit scanner is 'better' than the ship scanners for gaining access to abandoned ships and for some data/signal leaks; I don't know if that counts as the 'improved' bit.

Thank you for the reply, Merry Christmas.
Not sure what to do regarding obtaining the ship, can't hack the signal without an 'improved spacesuit scanner' moving the ship in range, and using long-distance or short-distance scanning doesn't help
I have all spacesuit items purchased from the vendor so I'm at a complete loss. I left a satellite at the spot and went back to my sector of space, maybe one day I'll revisit it after experiencing a eureka moment

Did you do a custom gamestart? In the regular gamestart, these are included, but in a custom gamestart, it is possible to start without a spacesuit scanner.

".. long-distance or short-distance scanning .." seems to imply that you are still in the ship and using the ship scanner modes. To claim an abandoned ship you have to leave the ship and be outside in your spacesuit, in scan mode - Shift 2 (with a suit scanner in inventory), and close enough to the red flashing dataleak and broken cabling by the target ship's suit access hatch to trigger scanning - ie very close indeed.

HI and thanks again for the replies

The game start is: The Young Gun, no mods, no customizations, vanilla game with all DLCs
I used the ship short range scanner at first: but it says you have to use a spacesuit scanner so I got out and went to scan the signal on the top of the ship using my spacesuit scanner
I got in range, the signal started to get decyphered, and then I got a scanner error, signal lost message "You need an improved spacesuit scanner" so dropped a satellite and went back to gate farming Xenon.

Just as a sanity check - you do have a suit scanner shown in the player inventory and listed under spacesuit equipment (a middle group of entries in the inventory list)? The signal lost message might just mean that you had drifted out of effective scanner range during the scan. You should ideally be completely stationary in-range (eg after pressing backspace to stop drift) while it scans.

Sorry if these seem basic questions, but I'm eliminating the obvious stuff in a very unusual seeming situation.

My guess is you simply sold your spacesuit scanner that you had at the game start at a trader and didn't realize what you were doing.

I'll go out there and try again later today, I appreciate all the replies thank you.
please note: I have a spacesuit scanner and constantly deciphering data leaks on stations, I'm well-versed in scanning at this point.

Update: went out again (3rd time) and the normal scan worked, no idea what went wrong with the previous 2 attempts.
I must have done something wrong previously since game code doesn't change or re-write itself. /shrug user error I suppose.

This happan too me..:)

I sold evrything some days early because i need money (20M in my invetory), and i sold my spacesuit scanner too..:)
Because too much stuff my invetory and I didn't know what it was for...:D

So i go to station and i brougth it one, problem solve now i can scan in in the spaice suit..and i can "claim" the cobra, so split plot is continue..
