Falling through ship after teleport [WORK AROUND FOUND]

Post by Daemonjax »

I built a new pc with parts I had laying around (10700k, win10 -- I hate it), and in the meantime it's been a couple betas (last I played on my old pc was... beta 5 I think?)... but I noticed (hard not to) that now I'm falling through ships A LOT... both after teleport (shift+d) or by entering from the outside while in a spacesuit.

There's that short moment where you can't move after you teleport into the shop... then, you're not sure if you can move yet, but you try to move forward anyways.... that's when it happens, like falling off a cliff... and I'll clip through everything and keep falling. I'm not sure if it happens if I don't try to move, or if I just wait longer before trying...

I think I can just teleport back in again right after it happens... not sure, haven't tried that (derp).

That used to happen to me all the time on my old machine that was struggling with my save, but after falling for a while it would move me back up in to the teleporter. Since I upgraded I've not had it happen once.

This also happens to me, with some regularity (perhaps 1 time every 1-2 hours of game).

Carl-D usually gets me back to the ship. Sometimes I have to teleport.

About 20-30% of the time I end up back on the ship I was teleporting *from*, after briefly being on the target ship’s booth.

It would be good if all of you could provide DXDiag and vulkaninfo reports, and also indicate whether your game is installed on an HDD or SSD drive. We're aware that this happens for some people more than others, and it would be useful to try and work out what the common factors are.

win10, nvme pcie m2 970 plus disk. I have 2 -- one dedicated for games, and another dedicated for everything else.

But on win7 (i5-3570k, so 4 cores) I had most of this game's dat files running from a ram drive because a) I was using slower normal sata 3 ssd drives (in raid 0, which almost maxed out sata 3 bandwidth-- but a ram disk was still 10x faster on sequential reads, and WAY faster than that on random reads); and b) this game breaks windows file caching. And I never fell through a ship, so I don't think it's related to drive read speed.

I'm using windows nvme controller drivers because the samsung versions a) increased dpc latency a lot (I can keep it under 2 with the windows drivers, but it's ~8 with the samsung drivers. Weird.); and b) I wasn't able to pin those drivers to specific cores without crashing windows on boot. Maybe I gave up too early on them, but whatever. They also want to reserve 2048!!! msi-based interrupts each, which is so damn weird. Too weird for me.

It doesn't seem to happen ever if:

I move the mouse around first to check if the game is ready to take input after teleporting. If I can move my first person camera, THEN its safe to move forward.

But if just hold down W to move forward and wait for the game to start receiving input atfter teleporting, there's a high chance I'll clip through the floor like falling off a cliff. It SEEMS that way, at least.

It's as if... there's a bit of code in there that tries to ensure there's a valid walkmesh before allowing you to walk... but it doesn't always work... needs a bit more time. I would suspect it's a multithreading issue. This machine has 8 cores, hyperthreading disabled (of course).

If it happens at a station, waiting (falling) long enough seems brings me back to somewhere on the station. I say "somewhere" because I've experienced it bringing me back to odd spot somewhere on the station's geometry where I needed to press shift-d anyways to get back to somewhere I could actually use to walk somewhere else. If I didn't have a ship docked there, I think I'd have to reload.

If it happens in open space, I fall forever.

shift-d (or whatever you have dock bound to) does get me back to the ship. But there's going to be situations where that could fail for whatever reason.

One example of shift-d failing is during the introduction mission for the Stranded start -- you (while spacewalking in your spacesuit) dock to enter an npc owned ship to escape the scrubworks prison -- so shift-d won't work in that situation.

Is there a console cheat command to teleport you BACK to your last valid position? Like a /stuck command a LOT of games have?

UPDATE:
I've recently been very careful to not mash the W key (move forward) after teleporting, and I've not fallen through the since. Instead, I try to move the fps camera with my mouse... when it can move, then I can move forward without fear. Or so it seems, thus far, after several long play sessions.
