I've had a few joysticks in my time.
The ones worth mentioning were the Saitek Cyborg 3D and the Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro.
The Cyborg was ok, and it was easy to lean to handle it, but I didn't like where the buttons were placed on the base of it, and the trigger button is a bit weak and flimsy. It is designed for ambidextreous people, so it can be adapted for left and right handers.

The USB version of it is called the Saitek Cyborg 3D GOLD I think.
I however have now been using the Proceision Pro for 2 years and it hasn't broken at all. It's more robust and more accurate, as it uses a digital optical ssytem as opposed to potentiometers (optical is better).
I still use the Precision Pro for X Tension and X-Wing Alliance which I play online all the time. It comes with an USB adapter. Unfortunately they don't make this great joystick any more, but there is a Microsoft Sidewinder Procision Pro 2. I don't think that it is as good, but it probably is the next best thing. See what other people say on it. Also, the Microsoft ones are only for Right handed users.
