[CRASH] The game does not start using Steam - Fixed by disabling SentinelOne antivirus.

Hey, yesterday after many days of doubts, I bought X4 Foundations in the Community of Planets version. My disappointment was huge when it turned out that after starting the game via Steam, the title starts literally for several seconds and then turns off - without any prompt, without generating a crash report, etc. This is the only game out of dozens I have on Steam that behaves like this After many hours of testing where I have done everything recommended in guides on the internet (e.g. update drivers using DDU, repairing the installation, deleting and reinstalling it, changing disks hard drives, disabling all kinds of overlays, making folder non-read only...) Unfortunately, none of this worked.

Being a bit desperate, I decided to use the non-steam exe file that Egosoft puts on its website. To my surprise, it worked. However, I would like to be able to use the game on Steam - I'm mainly worried about what will happen with future patches. Do any of you have an idea of what else to try? I will be grateful for any suggestions.

First things first, we do keep the NoSteam EXE up to date with release version updates (just not beta versions), so you don't need to worry about future patches. That said, we obviously want to solve the Steam issue so that you can play using the Steam version. :)

I've seen a number of games behave as you've described, and sometimes the solution is as simple as restarting the PC and/or the Steam client (not just closing the Window). It sounds like you've tried quite a few things, several of which could have resulted in you trying one of the above incidentally, but if not then give it a try.

Another thing that can cause problems is antivirus software interfering with the game starting. Quite why this would affect the Steam version but not the NoSteam version is hard to say, but it could be that they have different signatures, or something to do with the fact that the folder used for saving config data and savegames is slightly different (the Steam version uses a numbered sub-folder corresponding to your Steam account).

One other comment would be that your various sound devices have drivers of varying ages, and those could do with an update. Again, why this would affect only the Steam version is not clear, but it's worth a try.

All of the reported X4 errors are to do with InProcessClient64.dll, which seems on searching likely to be an issue with an AV program such as SentinelOne.

Thanks, that's a good lead - I thought it was off but apparently not.

I can confirm that problem was caused by the SentineOne antivirus program - i tought i have disabled it but apparently not. Thanks for everyone who replied in this thread - on my way to enjoy the game.
