Links and tips for how to edit an X4 save game?

I have the basics and have effectively modded a save game to improve my faction status to work around a game bug. But I had to guess at it. I'm wondering if there is more detailed information out there on editing save games such as what the file structure is, how to find things in the file and whether there are "backups" of configuration info in different places in the save that all need to be modified to effect a change.
