Control Settings wont apply - Resolved

Post by JonnyJonnster »

soooo....long story short, ive come from elite and love the controls there, tried to replicate them in x4, and didnt really succed.
which doesnt make any sense, because i should have nailed them.
there comes the title in play, the game wont really apply my changes.
to be precise, it wont apply any of the general analog settings....
to be even more precise, ive tried remapping the mouse-x-axis from the FIRST direct mouse thingy to the SECOND, and it did literally change nothing at all.
Yes, ive turned adaptive control off, ive also validated the game files, ive frigging reinstalled the whole game! nothing
and ive noticed, that any change in the analog part of the settings wont apply, the rest works just fine for me.

so any help is highly appreciated to enjoy this seemingly great game, otherwise ive wasted around 40 bucks on a game that i cant play without fuming and foaming

Reason: Editing the title to say it's resolved.

This usually happens when your game folder is set to read-only in Windows.

Edit: I've never heard of it happening only for some controls, but check it anyway.

The Gamefolder from Steam, or like the configfolder on C ?

The folder where your config and save files go. This is Documents\Egosoft\X4 and all its sub-folders, within your personal folder.

So, edited the rights to edit my gamefolder, and the config-folder wasnt read only.

What now?

Next we'll need a bit more information about what exactly you did, what hardware you have, and so on. Start with the information requested in the very first thread in this forum: your DXDiag, vulkaninfo, game version, whether it's modified or not. Then we'll need to know what kind of controller you're trying to configure, whether that controller has any software of its own, which settings in the menu you're trying to map (a screenshot will help here), whether they appear to have been saved in the menu or not, and so on.

So, are we talking Windows here? Linux paths tend to be different and bit more fussy about file/folder names.

The entire directory chain leading to your Config file needs to be able to be written to by the game. If you are making saves to the save folder successfully then the Documents folder is probably OK in that respect.

Are you using Cloud backup, and it it possible that your backup is replacing the old config with the cloud stored one every time you change it?

Might it be that your AV settings are 'protecting' your Documents folder and preventing some applications writing there? You can exclude the X4 gamefiles folder and the X4 folder in Documents from AV protection if you are unsure about that.

EDIT: NInja'd by CBJ. :D

Just came across this with the same Problem and found a Solution.
As said above: Check your AV-Settings in Windows, for me the Problem was that i had "controlled folder access" under Ransomware protection turned on in Windows Defender wich was blocking everything* trying to write anything into, in this Case, "Documents".
*Everything as in : Any App not listed as trusted App.
By Defaut it's Off but if it's On and the App that wants to make a Change is not listed as trusted -> no change(s) allowed!

To turn it off: Open the Windows Security app. Select Virus & threat protection. Under Ransomware protection, select Manage ransomware protection, Turn off "controlled folder access".
OR : Check if X4 is allowed to apply changes to protected folders, if not, add it in.

TL;DR
Turn off "controlled folder access" under Ransomware protection or add X4 to the List of trusted Apps. Try again.
