X-gold - What should I play?
I've got X-Gold on it's way to me at the moment, is it best to just start out playing X-T straight away or would you recommend playing X-BTF first? I read the bit in the FAQ about this and it didn't really help, so I thought I'd just ask the experts.

X-btf
As previously recommended, if you have the german version, you can only get english voices/text for X-Tension, but if you have the english version, you can start at either. X-BTF will give you the story line and has a start and 'end' although you can continue consistently. The storyline forces you to go and do things to acheive an end goal, but you do not have to complete or even start them. Trading and fighting can all be done in both without caring for the 'end' result.
In X-Tension, there are more systems and you can be more varied in your approach to playing the game, but there is no 'end'. Instead, you have more sub-plots with mini missions having their own ending, which you may or may not come across, depending on where you go and what you do. SOme of them do not start until you have played 100+ gaming hours and acheived certain levels with clans.
If you have time to spare, then do both X-BTF then X-Tension, but if not, then do X-Tension and await X2. Remember, this is not a 'complete in 3 days hard gaming' type of game. It can and does takes weeks/months(/years?).

Hey, you have the English version of BTF?
I have the German version and have an ongoing project to convert it to English.
So far I've found English versions of several of the files available for public download, but there are 3 which I still need:
01.dat
01.cat
mov\00144.dat
If you or anyone else would care to send me one or more of the files I will send them to anyone else who asks and provide a written step-by-step procedure for converting German X:BTF to English.

I played X-BTF on a P3 450 with 8M Gfx and XT on a 2G AMD with GF4200, so ofcourse my gfx and gameplay were far better. I would expect the graphics to be a lot better. Dont foget to download the patches before hand from ego soft, so you can apply them straight away. You may receive 1.3 or 1.4 so there are 2 patches, 1.3/4 to 2.0 and 2.0 to 2.1a.
Good luck and happy gaming

X tension is not a game that can ever be 'completed'..Macio wrote:I will play just X tension as if it takes moths to complete then i will not have time for both befre X2 will come out.
Are graphics better in XT then XBTF ??
Metanoia... definatley play BTF first.. IMO the better game.. and, if you start with xtension then try BTF you will be annoyed at the lack of helpful technology added to the latter game and may not see the story to the end... which is worth it for sure.. when you get to the XO give us all a shout.. hehe.
have fun.

IMO, i thought BTF was the far superior game, as you really have to work to make a start.. think its probably something to do with personal experience as well. id gone into the shop looking for a version of elite, and came out with BTF.... . i can remember that weekend like it was yesterday.. heh!
although i was still quite excited when i got XT, just not the same as BTF, i do want a bit of a plot to follow and i think the game had the perfect balance between plot and freeform, when you got a bit bored with building an empire you could go of and try and find that damn asteroid again, or vica versa.. If i'm pushed for a truthful opinion, if xt had a similar type of plot line to btf, it would have been fantastic.. as it is i think it was sadly lacking.. but each to thier own..
i remember when i first played XT, i was very excited about flying different ships i tried to get into a TL, worngy, and ended buzzing about in my spacesuit for ages thinking... 'i thought it might go faster than this, and the interior is a bit dull' took me a while to work that out.. oops..
