If we cannot laugh at ourselves we might as well play FL

Is this the worse review X-BTF got?

http://www.eurogamer.net/features.php3?name=x

Perhaps you know different.

And before you all pile in, the views expressed in the review are not mine. I still play X - BTF from time to time as it is a pleasant way to pass the time.

some people make negative reviews just to get noticed.

I could figure out what to do the first time, it was exhilirating making those first few credits.

it seems like too many people have grown negative and pessimistic these days

Ah-no the wonder of this review is it is dated Oct-1999, it is history itself.

I laughed like a drain reading it.

I absolutely Loved X-BTF! I went back to it forgetting about my empire in XT to go attack the MO again!!! but then it's true I have the patience of a saint so I can't be counted!

I completely got the game from the start, (except the cargo bay I was frightened of blowing up when you pick up containers).

Other than that I really enjoyed X-BTF and X-T! Esp. when I bought my first Tl, that was an expirance I won't forget! It was knowing that I had earned it, it wasn't given to me, that Orca was mine!!!

I was really peeved when I got another one in the perseus mission

And BTW:

They gave X-BTF 3/10 and X-T - 8/10 so they listened!

The reviewer was kinder to X-T when it came out.

So if the first review found your sense of humour failing read on (and I am sure it did not) :

Well it certainly exaggerates for effect! Still, BTF is in my opinion a poorly designed game full of major and minor flaws at almost every level, which I kept on playing because I like the genre and it made me nostalgic. I had similar feelings about Frontier, which had equally grave (but mostly different) flaws and which I also kept on playing, not knowing whether I was more frustrated or addicted. The sense of "almost" was palpable and infuriating. With XT the flaws are lesser and the good design decisions so numerous that I quite straightforwardly like it.

And despite a backlash from the small but fiercely protective X fanbase, that's still our opinion.

It's simple:
As with most other fanbases we sometimes have a rather harsh attitude towards anything that *could* be a threat to the throne of the X games as "the best game ever" (slightly exaguarated ;) )

Having seen lots of Freelancer bashing around here I start to get sick of it...

Anyone willing to hear my opinion on Freelancer? No? well here it is anyway:

I DO like Freelancer!
I like the mouse control and have no problem using it!
I like the pace of the combat.
The storyline is cool (conspiracy theory is not new, though).
The voice actors did a great job (english voices that is).
The waypoint system is pretty cool and I would even like to see something similiar in the X games.
The ships have the same speed, that's a fact but it works perfectly well in Freelancer.
Even working out trade routes is somewhat appealing. (for the first time done...)
There are dozends of secrets to find - that's great, I like to explore and find new things!
I will not deny that Freelancer has it's flaws - EVERY game has.
The point is that I feel like being in the game when playing it, the atmosphere is definetly there (not saying it's a space sim atmosphere!) and that makes it a good if not very good game.
I could list many more points that I like or dislike but this will not change my opinion towards the game.
Now do I have to feel guilty of "betraying" the X games? I do not think so - X and FL are so different that you cannot compare them - the only thing both games have in common is that they take place in space.
I even go one step further: I recommend buying Freelancer! It is great fun to play the game.
Conclusion: 'what is better, X² or Freelancer'? NONE OF THEM!

If someone would ask you whether a Ferrari F50 or an Airbus A300 is better what would your answer be?
Can you actually compare them as you could compare the Ferrari to a Lamborghini ?

Now go ahead and flame ME for posting pro Freelancer!

Sorry but that's the wrong way to do it.
I still put my hopes into reason and we all should acknowledge that a war can not be ended by surpressing either of the involved sides but only by finding a way of peaceful co-existance.

Right then! You asked for it.

:D

Just kidding. BurnIt! and I see eye to eye on this. You have all expressed opinions, that's cool. We don't need to read them more than once.

Discuss, yes. Troll, no.

You should all be swinging from the tree tops with the publicity that FL is bringing to the space game arena. I'm chuffed to bits!

Cheers,

I agree with Steel, the attention on the space game arena is great and by the time X2 is released FL will have done most of the hard work. People who like arcade style space games will enjoy and keep on enjoying FL, however those who feel they need more of a simulated flight/self build/open ended game will turn towards X2. People who have never heard of X will be more open minded to taking a look at it because of FL.

Personally I havn't seen FL yet but will be taking a look tonight at a friends, regardless of this X is still a great game and one of my favorites. If I don't like FL I won't play it....simple. Each to their own :)

Peace!

Personaly I think there is a lot of support for Freelancer on this forum (from myself included). THere is also a lot more tolerance on theis forum for other games, and we are free to slag off the parts of the X-Series taht we do not like. You try that on just about any other forum and you will get flamed, deleted, and banned.

Try posting anything negative about a star wars game on the star wars forums and see what I mean. Even if you are in full support of the game, and post a comment like "I found that third mission really hard in the millenium Falcon, I would have preffered to use somehting fast and manouverable like an A-Wing". I got about 30 flames for that before the thread was shut down. All of them saying that I should go and and write my own game if I think I can do better. Pathetic idiots. I had been a part of that community for a couple of years, and that was the begining of my end with the forum. My comments about Phantom Mennace were not well recieved either "Go and make your own Star Wars film if you think you can do better".

When they started having a go at X-BTF I said I liked it and that they should make their own space trading game if they thought they could do better. They didn't recognise the irony and told me that I shouldn't be advertising other games on the forum. Me? They started it.

I think this is down to the type of people that play the X-series. They (for the most part) are not the sort of people who get into fights and murder each other over an argument about who is better at Counter-Strike (As in Vancouver).

I also suspect that if you go to a chess forum, they will not be slagging off Monopoly too much, and would welcome a new member to the forum if they have left the monoploly forums to join their one instead.
